Scotch is a very personal thing. I went on a similar quest to yours a while ago. I was looking for a good reasonably priced single malt and a good "everyday" blended scotch.
I found that I liked Highland Park single malt and MacAllan's best of the single malts that I tried. Of all of the blended scotches I like Famous Grouse the best. I was not surprized to find out that the two main ingredients in it were... Highland park and MacAllan's
I don't agree with those that say there are no good blended scotches worth drinking. It may sound well informed to say that, but it is simply not true. I also don't agree that you ONLY are supposed to dring scotch with a little distilled water and no ice. Again... that may sound well informed, but it is simply not true. Different scotches may taste better to you consumed different ways. Some with ice and some without. Some with a little splash of water and some without.
Resist the urge to listen to the self proclaimed experts and experiment for yourself, and go with what taste good to you. There is no right way or wrong way, except maybe mixing it with Coke.
I have had some Scotch snobs dismiss Canadian whiskey, however I think Forty Creek is better than most scotches I have tried. If Crown Royal is the best Canadian whiskey you have tried you are missing out on Forty Creek. It is outstanding.
Irish whiskeys are worth a try too. Bushmills is one of my favorites.
I have no American whiskies that I like. The best American whiskey cannot touch even the mid-grade Scotch, Irish or Canadian whiskeys. I don't know what it is, but I just can't drink them. Whereas, I always have a bottle each of Famous Grouse, Bushmills and Forty Creek on hand.
I always drink mine on the rocks with just a splash of water. I don't do distilled water, because our tap water here is about the finest in the land.
