Giving up on the rum, eh? You'll be back. Scotch gives me a headache.

Scotch is a very personal thing. I went on a similar quest to yours a while ago. I was looking for a good reasonably priced single malt and a good "everyday" blended scotch.

I found that I liked Highland Park single malt and MacAllan's best of the single malts that I tried. Of all of the blended scotches I like Famous Grouse the best. I was not surprized to find out that the two main ingredients in it were... Highland park and MacAllan's :)

I don't agree with those that say there are no good blended scotches worth drinking. It may sound well informed to say that, but it is simply not true. I also don't agree that you ONLY are supposed to dring scotch with a little distilled water and no ice. Again... that may sound well informed, but it is simply not true. Different scotches may taste better to you consumed different ways. Some with ice and some without. Some with a little splash of water and some without.

Resist the urge to listen to the self proclaimed experts and experiment for yourself, and go with what taste good to you. There is no right way or wrong way, except maybe mixing it with Coke. ;)

I have had some Scotch snobs dismiss Canadian whiskey, however I think Forty Creek is better than most scotches I have tried. If Crown Royal is the best Canadian whiskey you have tried you are missing out on Forty Creek. It is outstanding.

Irish whiskeys are worth a try too. Bushmills is one of my favorites.

I have no American whiskies that I like. The best American whiskey cannot touch even the mid-grade Scotch, Irish or Canadian whiskeys. I don't know what it is, but I just can't drink them. Whereas, I always have a bottle each of Famous Grouse, Bushmills and Forty Creek on hand.

I always drink mine on the rocks with just a splash of water. I don't do distilled water, because our tap water here is about the finest in the land.

Whew!! For a minute there, I thought we lost ya. Sailor Jerry is my favorite. Good luck on that quest. My Dad loved Glenlivet. But then again, everyone has different tastes. When you find one , maybe I'll try it. Thanks for a fun and interesting thread.

Keep it up,

My $0.02 worth. I work in a small town in Northern NJ and was looking for a gift for my brother for his birthday. He is a big scotch afficianado and I wanted something that he would appreciate without breaking the bank. Lo and behold right next door to me in the little food market is this business that sells specialty Scotch and Tequila. I had not really noticed it until I was bored and looking around and started talking to the owner Doug Stone. They do most of their sales through the internet so it's not a huge facility. I told him what my brother liked and didn't like and he recommended this stuff.

I know absolutely nothing about Scotch and dont really want to as I dont favor the flavor but will retell this story. I picked up a bottle and also a package of the Vermont Soap stones that you freeze and put in the glass to chill so it doesn't water down the scotch. Gave it to my brother and at his birthday we opened it and sampled it. His one word was Wow. Then he proceeded to tell me that this was a true Big Boy scotch and he couldn't believe the price when I told him what i got it for. He was blown away. Couldn't stop raving about the taste and smoothness. As this is not made in Scotland it is not a true "Scotch" but none the less it's amazing so he says and he's tried them all.

I dont have any financial relationship with this store and barely know the owner so I'm not telling this for any reason other than to spread the knowledge.

Maybe someone will find that perfect libation that helps makes a sunset magical. Good luck to all.
BTW for my birthday he gave me a very nice West Marine gift certificate so I call it even.

I'm both a rum and scotch drinker and my preferences are Mount Gay rum from Barbados and Balvenie single malt scotch. I guess how you take your drinks will determine your preference. I drink both with water but my rum is usually fixed weak or watered down like grog. On the other hand I take my scotch over a couple of ice cubes with just a splash of water. I guess I drink my rum and sip my scotch.

I am sitting at the keyboard with a glass of Laphroaig 10 year next to me. Based upon my research I expected I would not care for an Islay. The nose is formidable, I can smell it 18" away. The delivery is surprisingly silky smooth and then POW! All the reviews that talked about that smoky peat flavor sure were right. This is a scotch of notable carachter that doesn't apologize, just says "this is me."
The taste is significantly different from the Highland Glenmorangie 15, and Speyside Macallan 12. At first I was thinking it was to forceful but after the third sip I found myself enjoying it and now that the glass is empty I am sad and want to pour some more in.
I think I will!

This dram joins my growing collection.

Antiquary. Bottled in Scottland. Been around since the 1850's. Good Scotch, reasonably priced.

I suggest you skip the scotch and try some Irish ... start with Powers Gold, it may be a little harder to find than Jameson, but I think it's a little better for the same money.
Cheers!

I'm hooked now. I like this Ardbeg, but the Laphroaig is still my favorite. I'll try a Lagavulin or a Talisker next.

Irish is on my list after I find my scotch. A lot fewer choices; it shouldn't take long. I think I need to seriously check out some quality rums too.
