The Schooner Virginia, a 122 ft. foot long wooden replica of an early 20th pilot boat, will be christened on December 10th at 1045 at Otter Berth in downtown Norfolk. The ceremony will be open to the public. Guests and speakers will include noted sailing luminaries including noted sailor and commentator Gary Jobson and Captain Bill Pickney U.S, Navy (Retired) who was the first African American to solo circumnavigate the globe. After the christening the Virginia will be towed back to its construction site located near Harbor Park in Norfolk where it undergo further construction details to include its masts and below deck joinery work. I've had the pleasure of being a construction volunteer which consisted mainly of sweeping up hundreds of pounds of shavings and sawdust generated by the shipwrights. (Somebody had to do it.) I was allowed, under strict supervision, to install bungs and drive an occasional screw. The Virginia is indeed a true representation of the original vessel which delivered harbor pilots to vessels transiting the Chesapeake. If you can attend the ceremony
