Schooner Aground Near Portland, ME

"Coast Guard Sector Northern New England watchstanders received a report that the 59-foot inspected passenger schooner Wendameen ran aground at approximately 5:40 p.m. The vessel was carrying 23 passengers and 4 crewmembers. A 47-foot motor lifeboat, from Coast Guard Station Portland, responded to the scene."

Yup. Drove across the Casco Bay Bridge Saturday and thought it odd that the schooner was listing with no sails up.

We had a boat sink at its mooring here last night, apparently struck by lightning. The masts are poking up (it was a ketch or yawl), but the hull is down below. Too sad.

The Schooner in Maine actually sailed up onto a wreck. A very well known wreck at that. In fact at astronomically low tides the spars on the wreck are still visible and most everyone knows about it. It has been marked on the charts for years.

My friend is the USCG officer investigating the accident and could restrict the vessel for 3 months.
