Which model for a Hunter 25.5 shoal keel? 500 or 700? I've heard that the 500 is a particularly robust unit and can handle furling for larger boats than the spec indicates. We will be daysailing a midwest lake in winds rarely exceeding 15kn. We'll use our 150 modified for the purpose. Any problems / issues with installing the furler ourselves? Thanks in advance. Bill

Roller Furling

I have a Hood "Sea Flex" that's a few months old on my 25.5 with a standard jib. It works very well, and can be reefed in 20 knot winds.

I have the 500

...on my H23.5. Looking at the website, there is more of a difference between the two models than just the 700 being longer. If your forestay length is covered by both models than I don't know how to decide between the two. I didn't install the 500 myself, but I could have now that I've seen it. You just measure and cut the foil and snap it on. The little trim cap that screws onto the top of the round foil was binding on my jib halyard. It tore apart but Schaefer mailed me a new one. I had to add the halyard restrainer (included) just below the sheave on the mast to keep a gap between the cap and halyard. After that, it's worked fine. ...RickM...

CDI FF4

I have ordered a CDI FF4 for my 25.5, and I'm planning to install it myself around the 18th. If you're also considering that brand/model, I'll be happy to let you know how it goes.

Wrightcrew,

I'm very interested in hearing about the project. An FF4 with ball bearings is pretty high on my list. I've been studying the documentation and installation instructions and it doesn't look too bad. TIA, Bill

Details to come

We opted for the non-ball bearing version. I'll be sure and post a follow-up here as soon as we have it installed. Do you want an e-mail as well?

CDI Furlers are great

I installed a CDI furler myself on my Hunter 23 this spring and it is great! Easy to install, very good instructions. Works smooth & easy, even for my wife without the ball bearings. You can buy it without the bearings and try it out, if you think you need them, they can be added later, cost is the same as buying it with them other than a second shipping charge. I found that The Sail Warehouse had the cheapest price, even with the shipping from Califonia.

When you bought your furler, did you get a package deal (furler / new jib) or did you just get the furler and modify your headsail?

I had my sail modified

Actually I had an old sail from another boat modified to fit the Hunter 23 it was off a Seafarer 24. I had a few old sails from different boats up in the attic, I sent the whole bunch including the original jib & the Seafarer genoa down to Sarasota, FL to Atlantic Sail Traders. They modified the genoa and bought the rest of the sails. I ended up getting the sail modified and a check for $39.00.
