I am considering replacing the boom with the Schaefer or Leisure Furl in boom furling system. Was wondering if any one had experiance with these systems. Thanks Tom

Also have a look at Furlboom as this is the brand Hunter is supplying ex-factory& I guess they have evaluated all the brands. I have a 38 being built now which will be supplied with a Furlboom. I have also had good feedback from a Hunter owner with one & have spoken to a neighbour with a prestige Buizen 48 which has one. He is delighted.

Thanks for the information. I was not aware of the Furlboom system. I checked out there web site and found that the rigging company that I am talking to is dealers for both. It will be interesting to hear why they recommended the Schaefer over the other. Again thanks. Good Luck with the new boat. I am sure that you are excited about her anticipated arrival. Tom

I ordered my new 33 12 months ago with a Furlboom and Hunter reneged on the deal and I quote the email from the dealer " Hunter came back to me today regarding the furling boom option. Despite your investigations in to this and the fact that this option was originally offered by Hunter, they are now extremely reluctant to supply a 33 with furling boom despite offering it previously as an option. They have explained that this system while good on the larger Huntrers has and will continue to prove cumbersome on the 33. In fact, they will now discontinue offering it on the 33 ....Therefore they have asked me to request you consider the in mast furling in lieu of the furling boom which they claim is by far the best for the 33" I was pretty pissed off because I had researched Furling Booms in detail and certainly didn't want a in mast system. I have since had conflicting feedback particularly with regards to reefing and hoisting the Furlboom other than head to wind. Frankly if you have to head into the wind you may as well stay with jiffy reefing and lazyjacks. I now would not consider the Furlboom without first going out in a blow with someone who had one fitted. I also initially looked at the Schaeffer which technically has a lot going for it but was put off by the bulk and weight of the boom.I would not consider the Leisure Furl as you have to put a hole through the mast as the drum in on the front. Finally one thing to think of with the Hunter rig is the bend of the mast and how the dynamics work particularly with a rope feed. Regards Nick

Tom, I'm on my fourth season with a Furl Boom system on my H410. its been a good system and I'm extremely happy with it. Nick made a couple of comments regarding these system. generally hoisting and stowing the sail is best accomplished head to wind. reefing, the most important aspect, can be done at virtually any wind angle. a friend has a Pacific Seacraft 40 with the Schaffer system that I've sailed several times. the Schaffer system has substantially more friction than the FurlBoom. this is mostly noticable on a sail hoist. lastly the FurlBoom system was the only one that worked well with the amount of pre-bend most Hunters have in the mast.
