Tarps are a gateway drug. They lead to $150 canvas carports, which lead to $1500 steel ones. Next thing you know, you're selling plasma to feed your boat-covering habit.
People do the same to vehicles being towed. My sister's 69 firebird needed a paint job after being towed 2500 miles with a nice custom made cover, which effectively sanded the crap out of the paint Many aren't aware.
One more cover story. I was stationed at an air base on Okinawa many years ago, and a lot of young airmen had their muscle cars shipped there. Once they realized the speed limit everywhere on the island was 60 kph (about 40 mph), and their engines were getting gunked up, many decided to cover the cars for the duration of their tours. Unfortunately, many months later, they uncovered the cars to find a pile of rust.
