On our Hunter 386 (2004 model), Hunter Marine installed two 30 amp Charles Marine isolation transformers in the aft berth area. Over the past few years they developed a loud hum - buzz that was a big hinderence to a good nights sleep. After having numerous boat yards evaluate the problem, I was facing about $1300 to buy two replacements.
As I opened up the sealed aft enclosure to confirm the dimenisions for the new ones, it became apparent by the "This end up arrow" that the transformers were installed on their "back" rather than upright as the big arrow on the side indicated. After some thought I decided to reinstall them upright.
I was able to remove the two lag bolts on each and construct a backing support and then rotated them so the arrow was pointing UP. No wires were removed. I then connected the shore power cables and powered up the AC side utilities and air conditioning unit. My surprise - NO NOISE. After 30 mins. still no noise.
Question to all. Has anyone else had this problem? Why did Hunter Marine install them this way? Did anyone at Hunter read the installation instructions? Wow, another Hunter production snafu IMHO.

Hey Ron,

Thanks for the tip. We have a hum in the same area of our 41DS. I'll check it out this weekend.

My 2004 386 and my neighbor's 2004 36 had a low hum from the aft transformer. They were replaced with a galvanic isolator for a few hundred dollars. No hum now.
