Had to snap this photo. We were on the way to sea out of the Mission Bay entrance. He was paddlin into 12-15 knots apparent and dead to wind. Almost offered a line but... thought if he took offense and got ahold of me, he might twist me into new and different shapes :)

Hell, I did that for over a year...

I just recently put an OB back on my boat. You'd be amazed at how sharp your sailing skills get when ya don't have a motor. Especially when docking.

I knew...

a guy with a Cape Dory 28 who, while waiting for his engine to be rebuilt, did a L Michigan cruise that way. I don'tthink it worked too well for him.

Just glad to see I am not the only one

But the alternative is putting off sailing for another year :( It is a good thing that I have a willing crew that makes my boat a 3 manpower engine :)

Tappan Zee

When I was in high school we had a small keel boat on the Tappan Zee on the Hudson River. More than once we paddled the width, about 3 miles, with canoe paddles. We thought it was just part of the fun.

It works just fine

I had sweeps for my second 22-foot Sea Sprite and I sailed her without an engine everywhere. And I mean everywhere including trans-Atlantic. It worked just fine and if there was too much wind to row you had just enough wind to sail and if there wasn’t enough wind to sail there wasn’t enough wind to get in the way of rowing. All the best, Robert Gainer

Years Ago Cruising World

Had a brief article on an Australian woman who sailed from Australia to North Carolina without an engine. Time is the main thing that makes us buy engines. Well lack of time.

Lin and Larry Pardey built Taleisin without

an engine. they have sailed around the world plus some. Besides that they are not wired for electricity.

I have met a few

boats without engines. They rely a lot on others to be towed into harbours and anchorages.

Rick, we have one of those in our marina

he relies on others for a lot of other things too. Not a man that I find necessary in this world.

I 'sailed' to my slip on my last return....

Damn engine quit (busted fuel pump), so we had a rollcking good sail up the shore in 20 knots beating into the swells. :) Everything went fine ('cept I let the Commodore talk me into using the jib instead of the main in the marina) until our speed died on the far side of the fairway about 3 slips short of ours. So there I was pushing us along with the boathook, with assistance from several highly amused neighbors. That was going fine until the boathook slipped while I was pushing hard on a piling..... and I was faced with either taking a face-plant on the dock or getting wet.... I chose the water. Naturally, the amusement level (amongst our neighbors, not mine!) rose exponentially. Well, we got a BIG push that drifted us across the fairway and into our slip.... more practice needed on that manuever, for sure. BTW, I don't mean to criticize the Pardeys, but I feel it's fair to point out that they make their living off their ideosyncracy (sp?) of sailing an engineless boat. I admire their skills and tenacity, but I also can't see myself leaving the harbor without all of my gadgetry and conveniences. :) Cheers, Bob s/y X SAIL R 8

Planned Engineless

A couple at Panama City sailed their new to them boat from Texas to Panama City without an engine. They had friends give them a tow to get started then they sailed all of the way to the entrance of Watson's Bayou and then had a tow into the marina. Watson's bayou is too narrow to sail unless you have a very favorable wind. They used solar panels for electricity during their trip. their engine is now fully operational. They said that it got frustrating at times when there was no wind but overall the trip was a success. The only option to sailing engineless was to repair the boat in Texas which is a long way from Atlanta. Engineless is a great romantic ideal but several times I have been very relieved to hear the "monster in the bilge" start growling and then take us home. A few times the wind died in my windsurfer and laser sailing days. Both are hard to paddle!!!
