Do I use the satin finish cetol or the gloss finish? It seems from the directions that the gloss is for the top coat. I am not enthused about purchasing two quarts of product for about 41 dollars each. If it is customary to apply the satin finish first and then use the gloss than I will. Just not sure.
What is the usually procedure and type of cetol?

You can buy it cheaper from a site like wholesalemarine. Last time i checked about $30 a quart delivered. I believe to get the best results you need the gloss top coat. The top coat being gloss provides UV and stain protection and also provides a nice finish. The satin with pigment also offers uv protection but think of the gloss coat as the sacrificial coat. Next year lightly sand it and apply a fresh gloss coat.

All depends on what you want it to look like. I've never put a gloss top on and can live with the orange. My can of cetol is 13 years old and still working.

Yeah, my bad... Dubo.. I read the the damn label wrong I guess. Here's another piece from the same link I referred that absolutely contradicts my statement. http://www.wholesalemarine.com/p/ILX-IVA-315Q/#readmore

Thanks for the correction.

Where I may have become confused is the "topcoat" function... I thought the article I read from Jamestown Dist. said the satin was for wood color protection and the gloss was like a sacrificial coat that would be renewed yearly and offered no UV... apparently I cain't read.

Think about it!

For wood always use the gloss as the base coats, it’s clear so you do not cloud up the beauty of the wood and then use the satin as the final coat for the look. Don’t cover up wood with non-clear coatings and then add a clearcoat for the finish.

Cetol why?

I had Cetol on my boat from the PO and it was always tacky. So off it went.
The next treatment was with epithains (sp?) that lasted less then a year with two coats. BTW I refinished the cabin sole and it still looks like new.
I have since stripped all the teak topside and have started to use Messmers caribeain extreme.
I must say that of all the finishes that I have used this is by far the best I have seen. Good luck and fair winds

Geezus......... so you're saying the manufacturers recommendation is incorrect? Have you called Interlux yet, to tell them of this misprint?
Cetol Marine Gloss provides a high gloss, hard wearing, UV protection and an easy to clean finish and is developed as a topcoat for Cetol Marine, Cetol Marine Light and Cetol Marine Natural Teak for whenever a gloss finish is desired. Do not use on decks.
