Rick, you're right! I'll check back in when the CB is laying flat on the concrete in the boatyard.... And again when it't put back together. BrianW

After I got through with the bolt head, it was pretty ugly, but the threads are perfect. It has to be the nut that came unwelded. I stuck my pinky into the hole and could feel the backet, but not the nut. BrianW

Whish my Flight Surgeon Used his Pinky

Not to look a gift horse in the ass or question success but were you using a left hand drill bit?

Running the drill would tighten the nut unless inertia took over when the bolt quit spinning and the nut spun right off the bolt.

Did you go out and buy a lottery ticket yet.

Rick, I thought through this stroke of luck and can't logically explain it .... if my drill were running clockwise. When I get home, I'll take a look at my drill to see if I had accidentally hit the reverse switch. It should still be at its last setting. I do remember being frustrated that my 3/4" drill bit was not eating through metal. Reverse spin would explain that too. BrianW

A check of the drill setting... the bit was turning clockwise. No explanation of result! BrianW
