It depends on the fittings...

Gray PVC fittings that are nominal 1.5" thread x 1.5" barbed are actualy 1.5" thread by 1 5/8" barbed. Why? I've never found anyone who knows...and it's only true of 1.5" fittings...all other sizes, the nominal and actual sizes are the same. But that extra 1.8" diamter of the so-caled 1.5" barb makes it almost impossible to get a hose onto without over-heating the hose so much that it damages it. However, nylon and marelon thread-barb tank fittings are actual 1.5 x 1.5...the hose should slip onto those with only a reasonable amount of effort if you warm it a bit with a blow dryer and lubricate with dish soap, or better yet, K-Y. Do NOT use vegetable or any other oil or grease that remains slippery...the fitting can work it's way off again. Dishsoap and KY are water soluble lubricants that dry out and do not remain slippery.

Is there any easy way to get 1 1/2" sanitaion hose onto 1 1/2" fittings, without severe blood loss, and broken knuckles in tight spots?

Heat it

put the end into a pot of boiling water. You can also use a heat gun. You can use a little soap or corn oil too.

ky works better than veg oil

better to use a water based lubricant and hot water or hair dryer, as it will not degrade the plastic fitting or hose

The real answer

The previous methods may work but you will find that fittings made for marine hose and conventional plumbing fittings are not the same size. Sealand makes fittings which fit the hose correctly and can be glued to PVC pipe. PVC pipe will last forever and never stink so use the shortest hose possible and buy the rest of the system at Home Depot

Peg, Your going to head heaven

The people that make those gray 1 1/2" PVC fittings that are not 1 1/2" should be pantsed in public.

I wouldn't go THAT far...:)

First of all, y'all need to understand that very few plumbing fittings are "marine specific"...most of 'em are available from any really good hardware store--the ol' fashioned kind, not the retail "box." Second, there HAS to be a good reason why ONLY gray PVC 1.5" fittings are nominal 1.5" thread x 1.5" thread are ACTUAL 1.5" thread x by 1 5/8" barb...I haven't found that answer yet in 15 years of asking every plumber I run into...but someday I WILL!!! :) Meanwhile...if that's what you have, get thee to a marine store and replace 'em with nylon or marelon.

PVC Fittings

I already did Peg, I never would have known about the fittings without you, and probably would have lost what little is remaining of my sanity trying to get the hose on them.

Heat It #2

I quit fighting with sanitation hose a long time ago. I heat it gently with a heat gun on low setting. The hose becomes soft and cooperative. The boiling water trick would work too, it's just I usually find myself trying to do this kind of thing in real awkward positions. The heat gun is also the solution to removing old sanitation hose.

Peg................

I'm getting ready to do some hose-to-barb plumbing soon, and in regard to the soap/K-Y Jelly thaing, I've used anti-sieze in the past to make DIS-assembly easier in those impossible-to-reach places later. Am I desroying the fitting or the hose? Spontaneous disassembly has not been an issue...yet. Thanks. Dave
