But it's YOUR boat..whatever floats it for you is ok with me.
No worries -- I am at least a year from the Electrascan project ... just some advanced planning for now. You have helped me with what I need for the aft head re-do - THANKS! And I still like your suggestion for using a portable MSD in the other head until ready for the permanent re-do -- that way I get rid of the bladder tank, old stinky hose and also plenty of space & time to plan the ES with new tank installation.

Hi Peggie,

What do you think of this plan?: I intend to install an Electro-Scan within two feet of the toilet, then send the treated waste to the holding tank, so I will be compliant in all waters. I can dump the holding tank, or pump it out, depending on what is legal and/or prudent. This will eliminate the problem of holding untreated waste, in the event of longer stays in NDZ areas, such as Block Island, R.I., or the Florida Keys, both places on my 2011 float plan. I imagine this will also greatly reduce the likelihood of any future odor problems, and will possibly keep the new hoses in cleaner overall condition. This is sort of the reverse of hold & treat...Treat & hold until convenient to discharge or pump out. Any thoughts?

Only one possible flaw in your plan...

Waste has to go directly overboard from the treatment device to BE "treated waste." Once waste goes into a tank, it's no different from waste that goes into the tank directly from the toilet...no longer treated waste. Sending treated waste into the tank would not make it legal to dump the tank inside the "3 mile limit."

Reason: the LectraSan, ElectroScan and PuraSan do reduce bacteria count to less than 10/100 ml...WAY below the legal limit of 1000/100 ml for treated waste. But only ONE of the li'l buggers has to survive in the tank to quickly multiply into zillions again, especially in hot weather. Nor is there anyway to know what the bacteria count in the tank is at the time the tank is dumped...no way to prove that it's below the legal amount.

So you'd still have to pump out while in ND waters...which, btw, in the Keys extend NINE miles into the Gulf (but only 3 into the Atlantic)...However, fwiw, the Keys and Block Island have mobile pumpout boats that can visit every day if necessary.

Nor does treating waste first make it any easier to maintain an odor-free tank. The same factors that make it illegal to dump the tank inside 3 miles also create the same conditions IN the tank as untreated waste. You're welcome to give me another call to discuss the best way to set up the tank.

Just when you thought you had the whole thing figured out....

Okay, today I am removing the old hoses and servicing the system....the trident hose is en-route, and I will start with a clean engine room & bilge. Once it's "all-clear" the task will be how best to use what space I have to create a working system that is both compliant and user-friendly. I'll be in touch. Thanks.
