I recently sold a Hunter 23 that I had for 15 years . I am looking for a larger boat and a place to keep it in the Sandusky Bay, Catawba Island area . The Hunter was a nice inland lake boat that I will miss but want something a little heavier for Lake Erie islands. I dont want anything over 30 ft but would like suggestions , thanks in advance, Mike B

There is an Island Packet 27

For sale at Herl's Harbor on Catawba Island. Looks like a nice boat. I orginally chose Catawba Island over Sandusky because everytime I drove to Sandusky, I would get caught by a train on Route 4. There is also a great grocery store, Basset's IGA, on 53 at the start of Catawba. Catawba is a 2 hour sail to the Bass Islands, 1 hour to Kelley's and 5 hours to the north end of Pelee. Once a year we sail to Cedar Point marina. It wouldn't be so much fun if we docked in Sandusky. JohnnyMac H380 S/V Dawn Treader

Sandusky Harbor Marina

I highly recommend Sandusky Harbor Marina. 800-877-3625. Great rates, Great folks. Tell 'em I sent ya. Only downside is that it is the farthest from the islands. In ugly weather on Lake Erie, that's really a plus. You can still sail the Bay. The entrance to the bay gets chewed up by powerboaters particularly on the weekends. If you're too far west of the channel, you'll get stuck in the mud so EVERYBODY's in the channel. There are several boats for sale there as well although they don't act as a brokerage. Contact Freeman-Eckley in Vermillion. There's a couple of Catalina 30's in the Sandusky area that they are brokering.

sandusky ,

John a few years ago we spent a long weekend at East( Bay ?) State park . We drove up and camped at the state park and took our pwc.We spent most of one whole day riding Sandusky Bay and were amazed at the amoount of water and very few boats anywhere/There were a fair number of power boats/ sort of just inside the bay at what looked to be a sand bar .With all that water it is hard to imagine it getting a bad chop . I believe you dont get me wrong it is just that we have been on smaller inland lakes and Sandusky Bay itself is HUGE . Our sailing has been at Alum Creek , Indian Lake and Hoover Reservoir . Our Weekend at Catawba /Put in Bay just reminded us what a truly great area this is . I originally thought of the bay because of weather etc . Thanks for your comments, Mike

West is best

I often sail only in the bay. I've been amazed at how much water there is. In all of the years driving over the bay bridge on SR 2, the size of the bay just never sunk in. West is best as far as the crowds are concerned. I stay west of the coal pier. There seems to be plenty of depth (9 - 10 feet)all the way from the railroad bridge to Johnson's Island. The area around Cedar Point, Battery Park and the Yacht Club seem to always have a lot more traffic. I've heard many people describe the bay entrance as a washing machine on busy days when the wind is from the north/northeast. I've bounced a lot there. My family may never forget our first trip to Kelley's Island.

West Bay

John , when you say west is best are you refering to the bay west of rt 2 ? When we were on the pwcs I dont remember seeing any sail boats on that side of the bridge . Was not sure or just forget what the height is in reference to a mast . Mike

No, sorry

Sorry for the confusion. No, the bay west of the bridge may be deep enough but I don't think that the Route 2 bridge is high enough. At least not for my 41 feet of mast and antenna. The railroad bridge lifts but the road bridge does not. Still, there's lots of room west of the coal pier to the RR bridge.

west bay

John, thats still a lot of water . I just wonder why more powerboats arent using that area . I like to sort of get away from the crowd , one of the reasons for boating . Thanks again for the info ,Mike
