My kids bought a home in the Sandpoint, Idaho area and plan to live there. So when is a good time to drag my MacGregor 26D up there?:confused: Do we have allot of members around there? I know Sum has been there and I have a bridge to deal with.

Spend a Spring or Summer afternoon on Lake

Isabella and you'll see the basic drawback of lake sailing. Check out the afterbay at Castaic Lake. Western Lakes can be good for sailboards and maneuverable small sailboats but are not very conducive to cruising or sailboats above 18 feet generally.

Disagree - I have a 26' Hunter and live about 30 minutes south of Sandpoint, Idaho. Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced "Ponderay") has several larger than 18 foot sailboats and is a wonderful lake to sail on ( in summer - April to mid-October). Sandpoint sits on the western edge of lake Pend Oreille. About 45 minutes South of Sandpoint is Lake Coeur d'Alene (CDA) which also has several 30 foot plus sailboats - again in summer. CDA has a lot of power boats so I prefer to sail on Pend Oreille.

My H-26 is a trailer sailboat and kept in the back yard. We have significant snow right now and I would really monitor the weather/road conditions before trying to tow a boat to Sandpoint this time of year. Better to wait till late March.

I have been sailing on Pyramid for 2 years and haven't gone to Castaic because of the ramp. I know Isabella can get crazy windy. I am the biggest boat on Pyramid and normally travel 20 miles around the lake on a given day. Tacking back and forth to get up to the dam and then a nice down wind run keeps me busy.
Not planning to travel north until after the weather warms.

Sandpoint is on the northern end of the lake and the lake is a good 50 miles in length. Bayview and Farragut State Park are on the south end. It is a very deep lake (I think over 1000' on the south end). A 26 foot boat is on the lower side of average length. There are a whole lot of 35' to 50' sailboats and the same amount of power boats. Because of the mountains dropping off deep into the lake there sometimes are limited anchoring sites as 30' off shore you can be in 100+ feet of water. It is a stunningly beautiful lake and I think you will really love sailing on it. I am more familar with the southern end where the "Bitter End" marina is located. It is sail only with probably 200 boats or more.

My kids place is near Murphy Bay. I checked the size of the lake to the west of the bridge and it is way bigger than Pyramid. I will have to drop the mast to go under the bridge or trailer to the east side to launch. We plan on just going there for a visit this summer and maybe I will rent a boat before hauling ours up there.

.... We chickened our on the lake as we had only sailed about 4-5 days before that and we heard that it can get pretty difficult pretty fast and as has been mentioned anchoring can be an issue.

Down on that west arm is a nice little public ramp. Only problem is just past the ramp is a low railroad bridge. As I remember it you can get under with the mast down. Get everything ready and go under and then just raise the mast on the other side. We would like to sail that west arm and also the big part of the lake in the future.

Don't forget you are not that far from Priest Lake there and we loved Priest and Upper Priest and would like to go back there. 12 days wasn't enough time.
