Sanding dust and environment

I agree that we need to comply with local ordnances regarding
environmental protection. I recently painted the decks of my Vega after
sanding away several layers of old paint. To reduce that amount of dust
I attached a portable shop vac with a HEPA filter to my orbital sander
using duct tape and a hose clamp. It worked great and I now routinly do
this for all the sanding I do, including boat bottoms. Its cleaner and
safer. The shop vac can get loud so hearing protection is a plus. Buy
some extra bags and filters for the shop vac.

If your sander isnt equiped with a dust extractor spend the $70-80 for
one that is and $50 for a shop vac. You (and your neighbors) will be
glad you did.

Hi,

According to the guy from wich I've took my Fiberglass work lesson, the best
way to remove bottom paint is with a very high quality paint stripper, I've
done my all bottom with my previous boat like that (24') and it was much
easier then sanding and much cleaner, no dust at all, the paint falls on the
cover we have put under the boat...very easy to clean

Hi Patrice,

So there is an other Vega around, nice to meet you, may be we could meet
eachother in the spring...
You can use one "grattoir a deux lames" from Richard, very efficient...

Hello all bottom finishers.

I'm doing the bottom of two boats. Both boats have multiple coats of
anti-fouling.

Sanding: Random-orbital with 40 to 60 grit. This takes a long time, is
very dirty and dangerous to humans, animals and plants.

Richard paint scraper: works reasonably well if there are few coats of
anti fouling. Like sanding, can be dangerous time consuming and
relatively labour intensive.

Marine and other fibreglass chemical peels: Effective but can be very
expensive. Fibreglass safe chemicals without a sailboat picture are
significantly less expensive and equally efficient. ( be certain the
product if fibreglass safe)

My favourite: Homemade paint remover made from lye and cornstarch.
Requires more care as the product id caustic but with care works as
well as commercial products and about 2% of the cost.

Warmest Regards

Two years ago I had the bottom of our Vega blasted. The name of the
company was East Coast Refinishers in Pittsfield, MA. They used some
kind of plastic pellet media and did a wonderful job. The price, I
think, was $700.00, if not $800.00 and it was worth every penny.

Hey Folks!

It's now official. The deal closed today and we are
the proud owners of "Ready About" our 1973 Vega,
#1865. We will move her from the Cape to the coast of
Maine this Spring and would love to hook up with any
other Vega Owners out here on the East Coast.

Look forward to getting her in the water....it is
going to be a looooong winter. Hopefully the ice
climbing will be good and I can keep my mind off the
projects that need to be done!

Not sure if we will keep the name, but we kind of like
it...it seems to be growing on us at the moment. Will
probably make the call next spring.

Looks fantastic Steve....just signed up. I belong to "NEClimbs" and "NEIce" which both share the same format that you have created and it works quite nicely. Very easy to navigate and give one more options to read and contribute information. Well done!
Cheers
