After a weekend trip to Galveston we discovered about an inch of sand in the bilge. It was not in solution with the water but just an inch of sand sitting at the bottom of the bilge. I had pumped out the bilge before we left as it tends to stay wet from the AC condinsation. I usually find an inch or so of water in the bilge after a short trip but never sand. Any thoughts on where it came from and how it's getting into the boat?

Not good for bilge pumps. Were you near any sand sources? Entertain any racing foes? Do any sandblasting? Wash your danforth in the sink? Smuggling oysters?

Is it possible that you have an anchor locker that may be draining into the bilge, or have a small leak in that drain that would allow for water and sand to enter into the bilge rather than going over board throught the anchor locker drain. It could be as simple as it was pretty windy over the weekend, especially on sunday and the sand was simply carried in with the wind. Do you have pets onboard? Just some thoughts. I called my boat dealer
and ask them what they thought it was. He said since it is a new boat he suspects that it is fiberglass dust from the construction process. That sounds plausible to me. We've been sailing the boat for almost 3 months and I've noticed a little construction junk in the bilge but never and inch of what looked like sand. I'll keep an eye on it and see if it happens again.
