Walt-
I'm planning on spending the final night of our San Juans trip anchored in front of Agate Beach near Iceberg Point, on Lopez Island (depending on weather, excessive swells or wind direction, may stay in the better-protected bay to the north). I believe it is around 9 miles from Friday harbor, should be a short trip if you follow the tides. A quick hike from the beach at the county park to the top of the point gets you some of the biggest westerly views in the San Juans... Could be a good day trip with a picnic lunch. Here's hoping for a clear night and spectacular sunset for me.
(We are going for 3 nights, over Labor Day weekend, Fri-Mon. I'm sure it will be busy, but it's the only time we could get away for long enough to make it worth while. )

Hmm.. that does look like a good place. I guess the main place you would need to worry about the current is in the south end of the San Juan channel where it gets narrow.

We changed our trip slightly and I have ferry reservations now. We are driving from Poulsbo to Port Townsend, ferry to Widby Island then drive to Anacortes including going over Deception pass - all cool places that I am excited to visit. Next day a ferry to Friday Harbor.

Only downer are the forest fires in the NW now.. I know first hand from a few years ago in Colorado how much this sucks.. but I’m still really looking forward to this trip.

Some pictures from our trip.

We ended up sailing every other day and hiking every other day. We did two hikes that you could do from a sailboat. Really fine trip. We tried to get a hamburger at Lopez village marina but had bad timing - a Seattle Seahawks game was going on so no service. One thing we didnt do is launch from San Juan State Park on the west side of San Juan Island. We did see Orca from the Lime Kiln lighthouse area but likely would have seen them out in the straight if we had sailed there.

Really fine trip and thanks again for all the info in this thread.

Looks like a great trip. Glad you had fun. That is a great area to sail (or paddle)

We enjoy walks/hiking as much as the sailing and noted that a couple of the hikes we did could be done from an anchored boat - and we probably will come back with a sailboat some time.

First hike is around Jakles and third lagoon on the SE end of San Juan Island. The trail has spots that go down to the the two lagoons mentioned but they would be almost impossible to find from the beach. However, you could make your way through some forest (a bit thick but passable) to get to the trail. The trail goes up to mount Finlayson with some good views looking to the south from the top. The frist picture is the trail map - picture taken from the Jakles lagoon parking lot.

Second hike starts at the English camp parking lot which is very easy to get to from Garrison bay. From the parking lot, take the trail to Young Hill - very nice view up on top looking towards Garrison bay. We also did the walk around Bell Point - very nice.
