Question for San Francisco bay sailors: To visit SF for sailing, what months would typically be the best verses the worst. What wind conditions could I expect (probability) at the end of July, beginning of August ? Thanks, Roger rrhoades3@kc.rr.com

Roger, We can have some really nice sunny daze in winter in the bay, but you need a low coming through to have much wind...;-( Summers the wind is normally consistant, and late summer it blows 20 to 30 in the afternoons like clockwork. The best wind - sailing is from Mile Rock, just 2 nm outside the gate, through Raccoon Strait and over to the city from Richardson's Bay. Angel Island is a great place to take a break at the moorings/berths there and has all convienences including, museum, sandwich shop, crab bar, hikes..that sort of thing...

The worst is winter, NO wind

The best is spring, summer, autumn: windier than heck, like Ron says, anywhere from 11:00 am to 1300, wind picks up in the main bay. Summer is here (I'm not -- in British Columbia for a week or so), but you'll enjoy SF Bay anytime in July and August. OBTW: bring winter clothes for sailing.

Sailing in SF

Roger remember "the coldest winter I ever spent, was the summer I spent in San Franciso". Mark Twain. Oh and if your going to mess around by the big rust colored bridge, do some studying of the tide charts. Have fun Cheers

yesterday in the south bay...

...we had sustained winds at 28 knots just below the San Mateo bridge. Steep ebb chop. today's forecast: 18 gusting 20. for us that's a relatively calm day this time of year. best time to sail the bay is September.

oops!

They just upgraded the forecast. Now it's: Locally 15 to 25 kt with gusts to 30 kt this afternoon and evening near the San Mateo bridge. Another typical summer day.
