Do any of you have a recommendation for a bareboat charter company on the bay? I am going to be in Livermore, so we thought we might try to rent a sailboat one day. What are summer conditions like? I'm used to looking at pics of the Folkboats crashing through massive chop and spray. Is it like that this time of year?

You can try this guy

Gary, would go sailing for the day at the drop of a hat. He loves to go out around the bay and needs crew. If you want to give it a try drop me an email. Jim S/V Java

Try Club Nautique in Sausalito

We've used this outfit and really like them: http://www.clubnautique.net/charters/ They're well established in the area. Our favorite is a Hunter 33 called Amarantime: http://www.clubnautique.net/yachtclub/boats.cgi?loctype=Amarantime&type=northsail We've had good weather this time of year. Club Nautique people are great and will give you good guidance on local conditions.

charter on s f bay

either pick up a copy of Latitude 38, or go on line at lectronic latitude and they have a list of everybody. Depending on what part of the bay you wil be at, there should be a few close-by. Club Nautique was a goodsugestion, and they have several spots. There was a recent article in Lat38 about how & where to day-sail the bay. It has some great tips. Have fun

thanks for the info

Thanks for your suggestions. Club Nautique looks like they have the kind of boats we would want to charter.

About the weather

Bay sailing is great, but be aware that mid-summer it blows hard almost every afternoon. I was out three days last week and each afternoon the winds reached 25 knots, and the day we came back from Angel Island it was a steady 30 knots with gusts to 40. I had up the staysail and the rail was buried. Just be prepared to reef early. (I do not consider my 37 a "small craft.") Anytime in July I plan on a single reef in the main and use the staysail, which gives me control and a max speed ride. The jib stays furled. You can work the system by leaving early in the morning when things are calmer, take a counterclockwise route in the bay (around Angel Island to the Golden Gate, then back along the city front). That puts you downwind when you are heading home and the wind is blowing at the max, plus it makes for great pictures for the tourists on Pier 39. Enjoy, but don't be surprised... TN, Sanders hit it on the head. You can also tone it down by getting out of the slot and tucking behind Angel Island or the lee side of the City. I'm sure you will love a day on the bay.
