I'm headed up to Catalina island for the weekend wine fest and I've decided to leave SD Wed about 10PM to get there earlier on thursday. Any advice for my 1st nite time "crossing" to catalina island? I've got my course plotted, waypoints entered, and radar working. Thanks. Bob

You Are In Good Shape

You may encounter commercial operations between La Jolla and San Clemente, but they will likely be offshore of you by five or more miles. They are good about advising traffic on 16, so just monitor. The Avalon Harbor Patrol completes their runs of moorings about 0900 which corresponds to the best likelyhood of getting an inside mooring. Have a great trip. Rick D. PS: be a good Californian and try the Zin!

Two Harbors

Hey Rick and Bob, I believe the Wine Fest is in Two Harbors this weekend. That being the case, you should have no problem picking up a mooring as they start to fill Friday this time of year. You can always call as you get closer and find out how busy they are (channel 9 VHF or 310.510.4253). If they are busy on the front side, Cat Harbor is a good back-up and usually a better sail from San Diego. And stay away from any White Zin! That stuff will rot you from the insides out.

Not WHITE Zin!

Oh heavens no. I meant Red Zinfandel! It is a California (nearly) indigenous wine. I think I'm going to Cat Harbor this weekend, so maybe I'll sip a few. Rick D.

Phil, I had to look twice...

I thought you wrote that the last time you had White Zin you were doin a strip tease..

Beware

Should you see two white lights lined up vertically, a commercial vessel is bearing down on you. Try to deviate so the lights get out of line, indicating you'll pass free. Contact on radio regardless and deploy your running lights.

I agree about the Zins. I'm becoming a big Zin fan, and about 20% of my cellar is Zin. Try the Storybook Mountain (napa) and Dark Horse Zin out of Dry Creek. I'll be coming over from Avalon Sat morning in time for the Wine Fest at noon. Look me up; "Andiamo" Hunter 376. Bob.

coming out of San Diego

at night I got a bit impatient and turned west, then NW WAY to soon and I got into kelp like I have never seen, and the DUMB part about it is that I saw it on the chart and was warned about it on our way down. Next time I'll pay attention to the local knowledge! I'll bet I remember it next time i'm going in / out of San Diego.

I'll look you up if I get over there. Wife's getting over a bad bout of airline flu, so I'm still up in the air (sort of speak). If we do, we will be in Cat on Attitude Adjustment 2. We have a mooring there. As for the Zin, a friend introduced us to it. It is his favorite. He buys Bogle and Rosenblum at World Markets for about $9. Moderately priced and good. Rick D. PS: to my fellow boaters: this is TOO about sailing. I always have wine on the provisioning list. Rick D.

Kelp Beds

Biggest problem at night leaving San Diego are the kelp beds near Point Loma. Pat is correct that you must resist the temptation to turn NW toward Catalina too soon. Head well South around the kelp!! When clear of kelp beds head west until well offshore and then NW toward Catalina. Have a safe voyage.
