Hi all, I will be going to San Diego for business in early June and several of my coworkers have said that they'd like to go sailing for a day while we're there. I have the 3 basic certifications, sail (with the Captain) a 30 footer on the Chesapeake and we've chartered in Florida. Can anyone suggest a place to charter a boat for a few days, hopefully near the Mandarin Grand Hyatt, and also suggest destinations for a day sail? I really know nothing about the area, so any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks bunches, Kathy

I may be years behind

It was probably over 10 years ago, but I used to rent from Harbor Sailboats - or was it Harbor Yachts?. They were good and may still be around San Diego.

Coronado Islands

Southwest of San Diego 10+ miles are the Mexican Coronado islands for your cruising pleasure. Can't help with chartering.

I can't remeber the name

Hey Kathy and Others, I am in the Navy Reserves and we fly into North Island, aka Coronado, all the time. If we get in early I like to go the marina across from the Del Hotel and rent a boat from there. They have Catalina 25's for I think $90 for what if I can remember is four hours. The company has small marinas all over the bay. They do have a bigger boat, I think something like 34 feet that is for rent also, but it is for half the day or full days. They asked me if I could sail and I told them that I had my own boat. Their response was leave a deposit of $400 on your credit card and here is the boat. Happy sailing. If you are just talking about a day sail there are enough things to look at in the harbor. If you want to get really ambitious try outside. Just make sure that the contract permits it. I hope that helps, Tony

Hyatt downtown

Just got back from SD - there's a hyatt near the airport - a really large one - I presume it's the Downtown Hyatt. As you exit through the back - there's a a fairly large marina. 300 yards from the hotel, there's an outfit that rents sailboats - for a very reasonable rate. Make sure you have a familiarity with the area and conditions.

"Star of India"

Kathy, Sounds like a nice offer..some good folks here. Be sure and visit the Sail Museum while here, the 'Star of India' "Hms Surprise" a replica used in the film 'Master and Commander' but still a goodie, and others here in the water near downtown San Diego.

Harbor Island Yacht Club

Kathy, I chartered a boat for a day in San Diego a couple of years ago. I got it from Harbor Island Yacht Club. I've added the link below to thier website so you can check them out. They have a good selection of boats and they were in fair condition. The only complaint my wife had about the boat was that it had a diesel odor, which was only a problem while we were trying to sleep aboard. They have a link on thier website to a resume that you can fill out and get approved to charter thier boats. They were very friendly and easy to charter with. They are located on the noth side of the bay, on Harbor Island, and just across the highway from the airport. We stay in the Bay the day that we sailed there. The bay is pretty big with plenty to do and see if you'll be sailing only for the day.

Fiddler's Cove...

Ok here I am... Hummm... Fiddler's Cove gives the best prices in San Diego as far as I know but you have to be military to make use of their services... so I'm guessing that won't work. Unfortunately other than that I'm not much help in the renting department. I'm guessing a Google search of "bareboat charters in San Diego" would give you a bunch of info about what you're looking for. Let me know if you're still having trouble finding a reputable place after searching there and I'll start asking around. I'm sure someone at my marina would know something. Take care, -Levin

While sailing in the bay...

I've seen lots of rental sailboats. I've never really paid attention to any of them. They have the name of the rental company on the side of the boat. But like I said, never paid attention. So I guess I am saying, they are there. Just have to look for them. Check with your hotel staff. They might have an inside with one of the charter companies.

San Diego, Mission Bay, Seaforth, Next level....

Seaforth has facilities in SD Bay and Mission Bay..... Spend a day at each. San Diego Bay is very scenic... lots of traffic, big boats, no speed limit and a long way out to the ocean. Mission Bay Park, a few miles north of downtown, is a fabulous small boat sailing venue. If you like flat water then stay inside the park, there are many coves, beaches and guest docks you can visit. If you like the ocean, it's just a mile or so out the jetty. http://www.seaforthboatrental.com/ For something a little different, Next Level Sailing offers a sailing/crewing experience on the international americas' cup class yachts "Stars and Stripes" or "Abracadabra" A friend of mine is a regular crew on S&S and tells me it a fabulous experience for anyone. I'm going out with him next month (I have to pay, though) http://www.nextlevelsailing.com/about.html http://hotels.sandiego.org/246_attraction-tickets_a59.html

try thesee too

Seaforth is a good place to charter from. Have also used them for fishing charters down to Mexico. Decent folks with competitive rates. You can also check out www.sdwaterfront.com They have listings for charter companies and links to other activities in SD. Good Luck, have fun and remember to stay 100 yards away from any Naval vessel.

Wow!

Thanks for all the suggestions and information. I may have to stay an extra week just to see everything. Boss will love that won't he? ;D Rick, I sent you an email. I can't believe the comaraderie on this board. I guess we're all alike though... I enjoy sailing so much that if somebody else wants to try it, I'll do anything I can to get them out there. Although it's tough to do in Maryland right now. Boat gets relaunched next weekend! Can't wait... it's been a loooongg winter.

offering the same advice

I second the opinions here. Mostly rented from Seaforth, but ususally 22' and Harbor Island Yacht Club for their 32'. So if you want larger check out Harbor Island, not sure what size Seaforth is handling now -- and of course, each of their different locations has different stock.

I'll let you know

I asked this same question about a month ago. I'm going to San Diego on business and renting a 22' from Harbor Island on April 19 for a day sail. I'll let you know how it works out.
