I will be visiting San Diego in mid November, and would like to charter a mid 30's or so sailboat for a 1/2 day. Any suggestions on where to begin? Thanks.

Might try

Seaforth Boat rental. We rented a Catalina 250 from them. New boat but stripped naked with a short shaft outboard and no tiller extension. Half day is pretty short. All you will be able to do in that time is a quick tour of the bay.

Try Harbor Sailboats

Harbor Sailboats phone 619-291-9568 or another Harbor Island Yacht Club 619-291-7245. I think there might be more maybe Google "San Diego Sailing" or something of that kind. Roger

Seaforth Downtown Boat Rentals

They have Catalina 320 and 36 for charter. I've rented a Catalina 250 from them and it was in good condition. They are located near the Hyatt Manchester in an area known as (IIRC) Harbor Town. Link is: http://www.seaforthboatrental.com And for something a little different, 2-hour "cruises" are available on the AC boats "Stars & Stripes" and "Abracadabra" in the same general area (very near the cruise ship boarding area). I think its $99 per person for the two our outing. For more information on this opporrtunity: http://www.nextlevelsailing.com I'll be out there in a couple of weeks but will probably not be able to sail.

Seaforth is a really good company. Whether you want to rent a sailboat or go fishing in Mexico. We've done business with them for years on our trips over there. You can also check out sdwaterfront.com, it's a good site for hotels, restaurants and even boat rentals in San Diego. Have fun, just remember to stay 200 yards away from any US Warships coming in or out of port. You may want to invest in a chart if you plan on trying to leave the Bay. Lots of shallow dangers near the mouth, but the channel is clearly marked

I've sailed for all three

I have worked as a skipper for all three of the charter companies that do day charters. Harbor Sailboats has the best maintained boats and Harbor Island Yacht Club has the largest fleet, at least in one place. Both are on Harbor Island, close to the airport. Seaforth has the worst maintained boats, although usually adequate for a day sail and they have bought some new ones. They rent from at least 3 locations, downtown at the Marriott, in Coronado at Glorietta Bay, and at Mission Bay. Have fun!

Marina Sailing

You can also check out Marina Sailing (http://www.marinasailing.com) I've used them a number of times. They have offices throughout SoCal so once you get known at one office you can rent from the others easily. Cheers, Mike
