Hello, We will be trailoring our 26X to San Diego on July 15th for a week of sailing. Anyone have any suggestions for daysails or a "fun" restaurant that is dockside? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

San Diego Bay
Not many dockside places to stop. Coronado has a spot with a couple restaurants as does Glorietta Bay and also the north end of Shelter Island. However the Bay gets alot of wake chop and those bayside docks can really pound your boat. For day sails: Coronado Islands (in Mexico so you have to check back in at customs), Mission Bay is a nice over nite destination. You can also drop the hook just inside Glorietta Bay off the golf course for nice lunch. Have fun.

"Star of India" in San Diego
Buzz, insid the basin is pretty good sailing, and on the south side elbow of the Shelter Cove penensula is a good Chinese restaurant with a side tie dock in pretty good shape. The manager let us tie up there for three days last year, but the harbor patrol will wake you up, but it is a private dock, not they'res. The "Star of India" museum is downtown with several other ships and square riggers down there, including the HMS Surprise from the Russell Crowe movie. The "Star" is well worth the eight bucks, I've been there 1/2 dozen times. It is possible to pick up a mooring there, nearby and come in by dingy, but the harbor patrol in San Diego are particularly nasty and petty. A great place to have fun...;-)

Check out rhe USS Midway. Aircraft carrier open for self guided tour. Go early on Monday or Tuesday. Also the maritime museum where the Star of India is has a 40 yr old russian submarine open for tours. Be careful if you sail south of the Coronado bay Bridge. It gets pretty shallow outside the channel on the SW side of the bay.

Make sure you have your charts. Maintain a good look out for the gun boats, power boats, and wind surfers in the south bay. Lots of Navy ships. As long as you don't get too close you will be all right. Wind around the bridge is unpredictable. You can get caught up in the shift and not make it under the bridge. In the north bay, winds are usually in a southerly direction. In the south bay, they come from the west across the bay. Enjoy, the bay has some nice sailing.

mission bay would offer you quite a bit because it's shallow draft will allow you to cruise most anywhere. Every hotel has a guest dock and a restaurant. You can even pull up on the beach. Launch ramps are free. You can anchor for up to three nights in mariner's cove.
