After finally getting one of my sons interested in sailing, he is moving to San Diego. He wants to know if there are any sailing clubs in the San Diego area similar to Getaway Sailing here in Baltimore. Our club has day sailors and cruising boats available for shared use by club members. The club offers several levels of membership for an annual fee. The club also includes an ASA certified sailing school. Anybody know of any similar sailing clubs in the San Diego area?

Try this as a start...

You might be able to find more by doing a creative google. If he is in the military, there are lots of installations that have sailing facilities.

Venture Yacht Club

I belong to the Venture Yacht Club in San Diego. We are the most active in the area as at least once a month we have activities going on. Also, we are in more races than other clubs in SD. Unfortunately, we don't have boats available to be used by members. We do, however, often call upon volunteers to help crew in our races. Try www.vycsd.com for info. At worse case, someone may know of a club that does have boats available. In fact, I think there's one on Coronado Island. Hope this helps.

Try Harbor

Island Yacht club in Marina Cortez. They have a website and they do what your looking for. Also I believe the another is "Harbor Sail" or Harbor Island Sailing" in Harbor Island West Marina they do the same thing. I also believe there are a couple more. Marina Sailing, Seaforth, JWorld. Some have "schools" and some just have boats, check em out on line. Dwain S/V Dancy H340 Marina Cortez

San Diego Sailing

Harbor Sailing should meet the bill. Has a number sailboats from 22' Capri to large boats for cruising, ASA classes. The people are great. I took a class with them two years ago. Website is harborsailboats.com.

Harbor Sailboats

Harbor Sailboats is an excellent club with excellent people and a wide array of boats. We were members before we bought our own boat. A great experience.

Since you didn't mention your son's age or financial situation let me mention the least expensive way to go. Very good instruction and a nice fleet of small boats. http://www.missionbayaquaticcenter.com http://www.missionbayaquaticcenter.com/sailing.htm After completing the various courses the student is elgible to rent the corresponding boat for recreational use. The prices are very, very low. For each 2.5 hour rental session the charge is $9.00 to $12.50. There are eligibility restrictions but it is worth checking out.

Thanks for the Suggestions

My son is 32, married with two young ones. He just accepted a new job in Carlsbad and will be moving in June or July. My daughter-in-law just finished her PhD in Environmental Engineering and is looking for a job in San Diego. If housing costs don't consume all of there income, Harbor Sailboats or Harbor Island Sailing might be good options, especially when we come visit. Joe, Thanks for the link to the Mission Bay Aquatic Center, my sister and niece took surfing lessions there while on vacation in San Diego last year. Bob

Carlsbad?

Which company? I work in Carlsbad. Company I work for is called ViaSat. He'll like the area. He would be more apt to hang around Oceanside Harbor, not San Diego Bay.

Yeah, Carlsbad

Hi Brian. Yes, I will be working in Carlsbad. Looks like I'll be right down the street from ViaSat working for Breach Security starting in Feb., although we will not be moving until July or so. We are not yet sure where we will be living, though. Heather (wife) is still looking, but she will probably work Downtown. So, we may live in Downtown or anywhere along I-5 all the way up to Oceanside. Opinions on good places to live are welcome ;) Later, -B

Some of our employee's spouses also work downtown. They mostly reside in the DelMar area. I'll check around when I get back to work. I am on business travel to Idaho. Temperatures here are in the single digits and in the morning, mostly in the negative digits.

another option......

I left San Diego 6 months ago, but had used Harbor Island Club to rent, as well as Seaforth at both their Mission Bay center and San Diego Harbor -- also took lessons from them. I was ready to join the Convair Sailing Club that used to be the employee group for Convair corp., but is open to all members now that Convair is history. They have a fleet of boats, but you'll need to show your ability before you can take out the boats on your own. The rental prices were pretty good, so worth checking into. Good luck, and give my regards to Mission Bay! I lived in Bay Park right off the bay. A good central area to check out if they want to buy a house.
