2013 San Diego Big Bay Weekend April 26-27
Just a week away!
Are you ready for some sailing on one of the top ten tourist destinations in the country? Well, get ready to experience the beauty, the history, and the best weather in the country for sailing coming this April 26-28 on beautiful San Diego Bay.
We’ll be home ported out of the Chula Vista Marina down in the South Bay area. The Chula Vista Marina has again worked with us to provide you a wonderful sailing weekend with all the bells and whistles. We’ll have free launching at the best sailboat friendly harbor in the bay. Plus, free parking for your trailer and vehicle, and a special 75 cent per-foot slip rate per night. For you cheap-skates with a 15’ boat, that will cost you a whooping $11.25 a night! Move up to a 22’ sailboat and it will set you back $16.50! Normally everyone spends the night on their boat. San Diego offers the best weather for sleeping onboard. No bugs to worry about and you’ll never spend a hot muggy night onboard in San Diego. No matter how warm it gets during the day, once the sun goes down, it’s time to break-out the sweat-shirts.
OK, now here is the schedule for the weekend, so pay attention. Folks will start arriving on Friday, April 26th. We’ve been offered the hospitality room overlooking the harbor where we’ll have a pizza dinner, soft drinks, and some adult beverages. We’ll have a free will offering to help cover the cost, (remember, I ain’t your Daddy). On Saturday, well have a few more sailors arriving and it’s a free day exploring San Diego Bay. Saturday evening we’ll have our annual celebration dinner at the South Bay Fish and Grill. Sunday will be a shortened sailing day for many of us having to pull our boats out in the afternoon to head back to reality.
Chula Vista Marina has wonderful concrete docks with water and electricity at every slip. The marina has been filling back up, so some of the smaller boats may need to share a slip. The restroom facilities are a short walk from where ever your slip assignment, and these are top notch clean and well maintained facilities, including the showers! There is a world class RV resort right next to the marina, and some attendees in the past have stayed in their campers at the RV resort. Also right in front of the docks is the Galley restaurant. The Galley is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offer reasonably priced meals of exceptional quality. The bar is also open, and there is live entertainment and dancing Friday and Saturday evenings. But don’t worry, the band won’t keep you up all night, quite hour begins at 2200, (that’s 10:00 PM for you land-lubbers).
To get to the Chula Vista Marina, take I-5 south to the J-Street exit. Turn west, (that would be on your right), and cross the rail-road tracks. The road will curve to the North, (that would be to your right again), and the Chula Vista Harbor Master’s office is on the north end the last building when you come to the 3-way stop.
To get to the launch ramps, where the road curved to the right to take you to the Harbor Masters Office, there is another road to the left and that takes you around the south side of the harbor over to the ramps. The Harbor Master has a location for us to park out boat trailers near their office. They will provide you with directions.
Once you are on the water, when you exit Chula Vista Harbor stay in the channel to the South Bay. It is well marked with green and red markers on concrete posts. It’s probably a mile up the channel to get into San Diego South Bay and it zigzags, so pay attention. Hear me now, and believe me later, if you sail anything other that a Potter-15 with the centerboard up, and you leave the channel, you WILL go a ground!
Now, typical of all marinas in Southern California, current boat registration and proof of insurance is required, PERIOD! And, typical to the marina’s, you mush show that you have $300K worth of liability insurance, which again is typical of all major insurance carriers. So make sure your policy paperwork specifies the dates of effectiveness, and the liability coverage.
The marina is dog friendly, but requires you to be a responsible owner, and they do have restrictions of some breeds and sizes of dogs, so check with the marina staff when you make your reservations.
To make your reservations, call the marina office: 619-691-1860, FAX number is: 619-420-9667. Tell them you are with the SoCal Potter group that Don Boyko is hosting. For more information on the marina, their web site is:

Looking forward to sharing San Diego Bay with our trailer-sailor friends.
