At anchor in La Playa behind Shelter Island. SDB is a great destination for a couple of weeks away from Long Beach!:) Every trip is a new experience. We discovered this time around a couple of places where day anchoring is evidently allowed without permitting. Overnighting at La Playa, however, is weekends only for 72 hr (0900 Thurs to 0900 Mon), permit required. Need to weigh soon as it is 0755.

So, you're going to move around from anchorage to anchorage? You know there is a nice one on the weekend between SWYC and SDYC, right?

There’s a whole movement program. Anchoring plus YC reciprocities. Several clubs here, as you know. Actually been here since Thursday a week ago (July 30). Spent one night at Dana Pt on the way down. Sailed from ABM head marker into DP harbor (past the breakwater)—long, but enjoyable. No Pilgrim now. So sad.:(

Don't forget Mission Bay's Mariner's Cove. Very nice anchorage. Unfortunately, Oceanside does not have any anchorage, just guest slips.

Glorietta Bay? I spent several years there enjoying sailing, diving, fishing golf balls and selling them... Not sure about anchorage currently, but at one time was possible.

Glorietta Bay is also a 72-hr anchorage but one not restricted to weekends. Sign up on-line for permit. Good luck. If “full” keep checking until a vacancy opens up. Might get lucky. We’ve been there already for this trip. Of course, there are commercial marinas about but typically also booked in summer.

We might visit Mariners Cove after leaving SDB enroute back to Long Beach. It’s been a decade since going in there! Usually “tight quarters.”

San Diego has a very fine Maritime Museum that’s comprised of actual ships instead of only pictures or models of them. A few years ago the Museum completed its project to build a full size sea-going replica of San Salvador, Cabrillo’s ship that he sailed exploring the west coast of North America as far north as Pt Mendocino, which he named. The first European to do so leaving Guatemala in June of 1542. He discovered San Diego Bay, a natural all-weather harbor, as well as the California Channel Islands, and Monterey Bay (but not San Francisco Bay), plus other sites. For decades now he has been monikered a Portuguese navigator somehow in the service of the Spanish Crown. The Museum recently published a treatise on Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s life as a Spanish Conquistador, a native of Palma del Rio in Andalusia of Spain. This is all based on newly discovered and translated records in Spanish archives. For us in southern California there have been many “corrections” back and forth on the correct pronunciation of Cabrillo, which differs between Spanish and Portuguese. (I was involved in one only a couple of weeks ago!!) That is now settled!!

Interesting. Was there any discussion of him being born in Spain but to Portuguese parents and so the name might still be pronounced with the long L's as it would in Portuguse?

The author could not find any familial connection to Portugal or Portuguese ancestry. She did discover via a crew list a contemporary person who sailed from Guatemala to Peru with Juan Rodriguez (Cabrillo) de Palma who had the name Juan Rodriguez Portugues, a suffix notation to indicate Portuguese nationality or ancestry, evidently in wide use at that time. That other person is thought to have resided in Panama. So, it’s easy to see how a record might have been confounded. Effectively, there is NO evidence (no documentation) of Portuguese ancestry but an abundance of evidence and documentation confirming a Spanish ancestry.
