San Deigo Boat Show, part 2

The wife and decided to go. We thought it would be nice to take the train down to San Diego. Got to the station and the departure time was not the same as listed on the website, and the price was twice as much. So we drove instead and saved a bundle.

The show... totally disappointed. There were maybe 20 sailboats, all in the water. And I say maybe. I think I am giving credit to more boats than there actually were. Power boats galore. All over the place one could see power boats. Vendors? None worth speaking of.

This was a total waste of time and money. $8 parking and $20 admission. A total waste of time. I know I will never go to another boat show. I can see better boats and more boats in my marina.

The only saving grace for the entire trip was seeing the BMW/Oracle Trimaran that team USA will use in the next Americas Cup (I hope). Hugh monster. No mast, just the hull, but it was massive.

Anyway. No more boat shows. This should have been called:

The San Diego 99% Powerboat Show. :cussing:

Brian, sorry I mislead you on the show. I thought it was OK after the LB show which I thought was a waste of time. I would have guessed 40% of the boats were sail. I only went on one and that was more a function of getting a closer leer at a spectacular young rich Latina in an ultra short mini... Come to think of it, maybe that left me in a better attitude about the show

BTW, that Oracle tri is something out of Waterworld. It is *HUGE* and unlike anything I have seen before.

The tri was incredible. When I saw it I commented to my wife and a few heads turned to also look (I was on the tram). I want to see that thing live and in action. That would be cool.

Ah... the boat show... it blew chunks!

Sorry Walt. It was SPECTACULAR young, etc. There were actually several, but this one was in close leering proximity. No pix, they are only in my head ( and I hope they reside there just a while longer). Boats? Who cares...

What about the LA Boat Show?

I wonder what the Feb 11-15 LA Convention Center Boat Show will be like? I have been looking forward to it since I got my Mac 26D this summer.

I would look in advance to see "who" is represented. If the likes of Hunter, Catalina, Island Packet, Benni and Jenni, Tartan, then you might not waste too much time. However, in San Diego all these where there. But they had like two boats each.

There was a Tartan 3700 there and I saw it and just about froze in my tracks. I guess I was waiting to see if it would flounder. LOL (That was not nice, I know.)

My first boat show was in the 80s in LB and it was just full of masts. Every where I could see more sail than power. Then my second was in Del Mar, the Del Mar Boat and Fishing show. Should have figured that one out. Third was in San Diego and again, full of masts. Alas... this year... never again.

You shoulda gone sailing, winds were great, yesterday you coulda made Avalon on one long starboard tack. Today I hit hull speed on a beam reach with a reef in the main, if ya like wind, ya gotta love Santa Anas !

Brian, Save your money and go to Annapolis to the BIG show. You wont be disappointed.

Oakland show a few years ago was a favorite of mine...can't speak of current version, but Oakland used to be great. Stayed next to Jack London Square, walked to show, music, restaurants, etc. Lots of sailboats, vendors, seminars, end of show deals on equipment...everything I was looking for.

Ted, I went sailing today. Hit hull speed without any reefs. Also sailed along side three Gaff Rigged Schooners that were visiting Oceanside Harbor. One was the Californian, I don't remember the other two. They went outside the harbor and had a sea battle with their guns. Majestic boats these are. That must have been a grand era of sailing.

I think Lynx, Lady Washington and Chiefton were scheduled to be in Oceanside on Saturday and Pride of Dana was supposed to join them on Sunday. Don't know which boats actually made it there, P of D has some problems in the topmasts which might make them reluctant to bring it out in strong winds.

LA is largely a trailerable power boat show. If you just go for the fun of it, it's fine. Good deals on dinghies tho, which is why I went the couple I did,
