Salvaged 1985 Hunter 31

I have been looking at Hunter 31's and found a 1985 that is an insurance company salvage sale. The boat took on some water, from what they say a couple inches above the floor from a bad through hull. The oil and transmission fluid have been changed, there was some water in them. The engine starts right up and the transmission works fine. The rigging and sails look to be in good shape although one of the tangs on the upper shroud is missing. Are these parts available? In general the boat looks to be in pretty good condition. Any insight into purchasing a salvage boat would be great.Thanks,Jeff

well, i'd find the best surveyor around and make sure he did a very complete job. i'd talk to some engine mechanics too. if the price is low enough and there's no serious damage; why not? i have an 84' 31 and parts are never a problem.

I included a link to the makers of the mast and boom. I have ordered parts from them before and never had a problem. The companies name is rigrite they cary isomat parts.Jim

JeffEverything depends on the price!I salvage and refurbish sailboats for a living and at the present time I am doing an 84 Hunter 31 that was an abandoned boat in a boat yard in real rough shape - the price was so low though the condition just didn't matter.Also, it is imperitive that you can do the work yourself at a very high level, I also do repairs for other people and am expected to work at professional levels and I think I do judging by the number of people who entrust me with their problems year after year. If you are a decent do it your selfer and don't do stuff half way (remember you and or your family will be out on the water with the boat you fix up!!) a salvage project is a great way to get a boat cheap and get to know it intimately!That was my hook years ago - I could never leave well enough alone on boats I owned and always took apart stuff and rebuilt stuff as I was unhappy about the way it was done so I decided to turn that attitude into a business - also no sense in buying a boat at a premium price if I was just going to take it apart and rebuild it anyway!You know the "...nothing but nothing is better than just messing about in boats..." or something along those lines!Go for it.Mike
