Do we have any folks knowledgeable about titles from salvaged boats?
My boat came from Florida via Texas. Anyone have experience with getting a boat registered without a title?

It really varies by state..some require a fairly expensive process to research the VIN and any paperwork...others will allow a simple, signed bill of sale...

You will need to check with your state folks for the process. Some "salvage" titles have become so as a result of insurance being paid out against that hull/VIN and will likely result in that boat no longer being "insurable".

YMMV

Maybe I need to back up a bit. The paper trail I have at the moment stops in Florida with Allstate according to Florida dmv records.
Someone was able in Texas to squire this boat from Florida. The chap in Texas didn't do anything with the boat but says Texas is a no title state...

I have started talking to Illinois dnt folks... of course they are just generically going to tell you to search for a title.
I am of the opinion that if I have a boat at the marina sooner or later someone will grant a title to it... ?
Thoughts?

Texas is a Title State. There is not much you can do with a boat with out a title in the State of TX. Boats have a title and outboard motors have a separate title.

Not likely, given the amount of insurance paid out, fraudulent "used boats" that are actually write offs by banks or insurance companies of hurricane, storm damage or totaled boats. They simply will not rewrite or allow the sale or transfer of a boat once paid out....

Without a title, you will be hard pressed to insure or borrow against it.

I am sure there is someone on the web, who can "get" a title, just like you can get for a car or motorcycle, but....

YMMV

Your saying cut it up for parts?
I don't want to sell it. Not all that worried about insuring it I guess I would have to one day...???

Not completely sure on the law, but i dont think insurance is necessary unless you plan to race, and even then the requirement vary from organization to organization. Although its always a smart idea to have it.

Friend of mine just went thru a similar problem..Previous owner bought the boat in Florida then brought it to Louisiana. He did not register it nor did he try to document it.. Meanwhile Louisiana went to being a "Title" state..Florida is not. My friend bought it here in Louisiana and tried to get it registered.. MAJOR problem.. No title from Florida and the guy who was selling had not changed the registration.. Luckily, we were able to find the original seller in Florida and he was OK with giving us a bill of sale for the boat and the registration papers.. We were then able to bypass the guy who'd not done his La. registration and register the boat here.. There was a lot of shuffling around (two years) involved ! and we were lucky that the original owner was such a good guy.. Florida does not register trailers so that will be another story..

Florida is a title state. If you can get the Fl numbers, maybe you can track it back to the Florida owner and do what kloudie's friend did. Insurance is required by banks here in Florida, otherwise no loan. onna be tough to sell without a title.

This is what I have or know:
Hull id

FL DMV says Allstate has or had title.
First try with Allstate = nothing
Owners name before hurricane
Bill of sale from the person in TX I bought it from

Florida is indeed a 'title' state. I have a couple of boat titles in my filing cabinet sitting next to my auto and motorcycle titles. Trailers also require a title and registration unless they are under 2000lbs, in which case you just need a registration.

Cheers,
Brad

Don't know if this works for boats but Maine was very easy to register an untitled and unregistered trailer when I got my first boat a sailing dinghy.

There was a local business that provided a legal address and worked as your agent. No idea if they would work on boats.

Once I had the Maine registration getting it titled in MD was much easier. Again dont know how Maine is with boats but this might be your best bet if it works.

Can dig out the agents name if you are interested.
