Salvage Oday 272 carpet?

"Monkey fur" on the overhead and walls was all the rage in the '70s and '80s. If you can remove it easily, I'd look at what's being used now and replace it with something similar.

Just my $.02 worth...others' mileage may vary.....

Having the same problem in the aft cabins of our First 38. The foam backing is falling apart after 33 years. I've been thinking of gluing slats vertically, then cedar planking ( 3" t&g). Not sure about the ceiling yet but likely vinyl over door-skin.

Pulled the starboard aft cabin apart this afternoon. The foam backing for the fabric (looks like suede) was just powder. Will do some more clean-up tomorrow. I think a wire-brush and vac. then some 1/2 X3/4 slats, some insulation then some T&G. We'll see how it goes.

If you go back in time maybe 4 years or so on this very forum you will find a fellow named Andrew who removed all the
carpeting in his 272...and redid it with new carpet from Rig-rite in Rhode Island I think.....it was a nasty job but I believe it went well and that he was glad he had taken the time and expense to do the project....you might have to go back in time quite a while and I will also look and see if I can find the details of his re-construction project.....Patrick

Thanks Pat; I was looking for something that would be easier to keep clean than fabric. I think I'll end up with wood ( stained and varnished) on the lower parts and white Vinyl on the ceiling. The search didn't seem to want to let me go back that far. I got no hits except cabin sole carpet.

Probably Sailrite, not Rig-Rite

Thanks for setting me straight..Pat...we've used a 3M cleaner that has a bit of chlorine in it and the stains come off fairly quickly and with relative ease.....I can't imagine tackling the whole interior at once....Pat

Going to do this a bit at a time Pat. I've got one aft cabin down to glass and will start with it. It's the room I use for tools and sail bags so a good one to practise on.

Our Morgan 28 had that pebbled vinyl fabric on the hull sides. When I removed it I found allot of mold underneath. Once I got the leaks repaired we glued indoor/outdoor carpet. Still looking good after 3 seasons

We bought a little device at WM that plugs in and keeps the boat free of mildew, etc....as it keeps the temperature of the boat above the dew point....I've used it all winter every winter and am going out today to plug in....It is fire safe, with ignition safeguards....it is not a heater, but does keep the internal temp of the entire boat free of mildew, etc. because of it's ability to keep the internal temperature of the boat above the dew point.and provides circulation to most of the boat....I'm headed out today to plug it in as a very distinct cool down is predicted later this week....Patrick

I was going to encourage saving the carpet interior. But carpet glued over carpet is probably a good candidate to tear out, and start over. I'm sure there was a reason someone covered the first layer of carpet with a 2nd. My 222 has only one layer and it's probably similar between the 192, 222, 240, and 272 of the same era I'd guess.

I do not know about carpeting on overhead and sides of hull as being the "rage" in the 70's and 80's, and I do not recall seeing the appearance of the carpeting until about the mid-80's, when it was employed as an inexpensive way, at least with respect to O'Day, to finish off their boats when the company was about to fold along with Pearson and others following imposition of the boat "luxury" tax which was subsequently, albeit too late, repealed. In all it turned out to be a lousy deal for consumers; great nesting place for discoloration and mold.

My very long time ago mid-70's Bayliner had it. Great place for dust and mold to hide. It does cover all the bumps and hollows pretty well though.

This may be an unpopular reply but I can't imagine anything nastier than trying to re-use carpet....Forgive me...I've got some really nasty carpet under the cockpit/wheel but it's a nasty damp black from a leaking bolt on the Edson pedestal...but I don't believe there is a cleaner/stripper made that could clean this carpet....One of these days (& it will not be long) I'm going to take a sharp tool/knife and remove all of it from under the cockpit....but I will not save it and I will put it somewhere where it will not be seen ever again. Sorry
