I will report back my success or folly here in probably a week .... I so appreciate all the advice from everyone. This is a generous group.
Great. Pictures of your completed project with a write-up will be most appreciated. And on behalf of this group, you're very welcome.

What hose was there originally? Is that a new pump? Is it oriented correctly? Seems odd that the raw water hose would enter from the top.

I understand the hose comes from the thru hull. You have the filter located on the thru hull. This means the hose must turn 180 to get to the pump.

There is an alternative. Run a hose from the thru hull to strainer/filter located near the pump on the wood panel. The hose makes a 90degree turn into the strainer. Then the hose comes out of the strainer and a 90 degree turn to the pump. The action will reduce the severe turn on the hose to the pump.

I agree with above ... put more thought into your strainer location. You should eliminate that godawful loop that is really bad design - you may need longer hose to smooth transitions. Plus, you must have a reinforced hose for this application. No matter how smooth your transitions, an unreinforced hose will eventually collapse by suction. It doesn't happen right away, but after the first time it collapses, you can't prevent it - the hose is weakened (I've experienced it). Save yourself the trouble.

All, please accept apologies for late follow-up! I installed between throughull/raw water strainer and raw water pump Shields 254 series, exoFlex exhauster/water hose with wire, 3/4", sku 565256, from go2marine @ $9.25/foot. Perfect solution, look at that 180o bend...
