Saltaway ?

I changed the zinc anode in my generator. It appeared to have salt buildup on it. I have Ts on my raw water through hulls and flush both diesels with 5 gallons of fresh water each spring after the boat is hauled. I am thinking I could just add this to the fresh water in my 5 gal bucket when I do the flush. It will be sitting for 6 or more months so maybe just fresh water flush is not enough.

Have any of you used Saltaway ? Does it work ? I emailed the manufacturer to ask about leaving the product in the engine over the summer. The literature they have indicates it has corrosion inhibiting properties as well.

You should not be using a zinc as a freshwater anode. Magnesium. If in brackish, aluminum. A zinc will "salt" over with a zinc oxide salt and quit working in fresh/brackish. A nice long fresh water rinse wouldn't hurt. I run a hose to a bucket that is tapped to the raw water intake and run them with fresh for 10 minutes, no additives.

I use white vinegar in the engine at times. It seems to do better than Salt Away and much cheaper.

I would never leave it for a summer. I leave the vinegar in overnight. I fill the raw water strainer box and then start the engine. Once I see some white frothy water come out of the exhaust, I shut the engine down, then run it the next morning.

Thanks, The anode is in the raw water jacket of the generator and the boat is in salt water, sorry if I did not make that clear. I give both engines a 5 gallon fresh water rinse each year after the boat is hauled. I had a good look at my Yanmar heat exchanger last year when I changed all the engine hoses and back flushed both the fresh and raw water circuits. The Yanmar seemed very clean inside with no salt buildup or corrosion issues. The Yanmar does not have any anodes in it. The little generator engine has not been used much the past two seasons.

I think vinegar might be a good idea. I am sure sitting for long periods of time an engine can grow a bio-film on the inside. A mild acid like that should clean it up, TNX.

You should double check that - it could cost big. 'course I have been known to be wrong sometimes

Many Yanmars, especially the newer ones, don't have anodes. Counterintuitive, but true.

As far as I know they only use an anode in the raw water cooled engine but not the fresh water cooled. I have the workshop manual and that appears to be the case.
