Salt Water in the Bilge after every sail

I have owned CS22 #838 for three years and trailer it home each Fall, returning it to the Marina in May. Last Fall the rubber 'V' on which the swing up keel rests rusted off so I replaced it with a roller which was probably 2" too high. So to take weight off it I shimmed the hull where it met the cradle. This may not be the reason, but since I launched the boat in May I have been getting about a bucket full of seawater in the bilge, especially after motoring it out to pick up Crab, or sailing it in the Bay. I suspect a crack, maybe in the keel well. If I pull the boat out I wouldnt have a clue where to look, especially if the crack is inside the well. The only other new thing I did was to replace the depth finder on the base of the transom after it was in the water. Surely two little screw holes can't cause this? Any suggestions would be most welcome Ken

Check the lower gudgeon

That is where my C22 leaked. When under power the lower gudgeon screws are submerged. Get some rubber gasket material from a hardware store, such as Home Depot, and make a gasket slightly larger than the gudgeon bracket. Use an ice pick to poke two holes for the bolts. Add a bit of sealant to the bolt heads when they are tightened. This fixed it for me. You can verify if this is where the leak is by laying a towel under the cockpit areafrom inside the cabin. If the water is leaking from the aft the towel will get wet. This is a common leak for C22s.

Thank you Randy K from Eugene

Dear Randy, Thank you so much for your prompt response and suggestions. You won't believe this ( I am a Canuck after all) I don't know what a gudgeon is or where it is. It sounds as if I will have to bring the boat out on my trailer to get to it. Best Wishes Ken

Gudgeon

As President Bush once said "Canada is our favorite neighbor to the north." Happy to help. The gudgeons are the two (upper and lower) brackets that the rudder slips into. The rudder has two "points" (called pintles) that slip into the two gudgeons. The lower gudgeon is the one that submerges when under motor and can leak.

Thank you again Randy

I couldn't detect any water from the aft pasrt of the boat and now suspect that the leak is floor on the centre starboard side of the keel "box". Probably a crack line but I cant see it. Since the leak is miniscule when the boat is docked, but considerable (2 buckets) during sailing or cruising on motor, I think I will just bail it until the Fall when I take it home. I have that putty filler but I just cant get to the location. It could even be where the stainless steel centreboard hinge pin is attached which I know is a huge job and the nightmare of all CS22 owners.

You're welcome...but

those are the exact symptoms I had. No leaking except when the boat was out moving. A crack would leak all the time. I'll bet a beer it is the gudgeon. ;-)
