I am interested in buying a 10 to 12 year old Beneteau (35s5 or 38s5). I am considering one that has been in salt water all of its life. I am also considering one that has been in fresh water all of its life. Consistently, I find fresh water boats far more expensive than salt. What are the things that I should consider with regard to the salt water boats? I am trying to determine if the extra savings on the salt water boats out weights costs.

Salt vs. Fresh

Simply put, salt water is more corrosive and more electrially conductive than fresh so the metal on a fresh water boat should be in better shape. Also less stuff grows on the bottom. However..... probably 90%+ boats are sailed in salt water for their entire lives and it hasn't stopped any of us from buying salt water boats. Look for a well maintained boat, have a good survey, don't be afraid to walk away from a marginal deal and I'll bet you'll be happy whether you buy a salt water or fresh water boat.
