I am considering cutting my saloon table a bit to accommodate my belly. The table is just too close to the seat backs for normal people and me. The distance from the settee to the table is OK and I'm thinking of using that distance for the sides and back of the table.

Has anyone modified thier table? In what way?

I think Jim did some thing like you want to do on his 356,I would love to find some way of making my table smaller on my 36 for when we are not using it for dinning,I would like to have folding leaves of some kind.

I am having it done on my HV'36. The problem is the fact that the tables are NOT solid hardwood. They typically have a plywood/fiberwood platform with hardwood edges and either a veneer or formica top. If you cut several inches off the existing table you will expose the base material.

What needs to happen is that you need to cut back the top about 2-3 inches smaller than what you need. Then attach a piece of hardwood and reapply the laminate or veneer. Then you will need to re-edge the entire top with a router.

I will post some pictures. I should get mine back this week.

I completely removed the OEM table and designed and built two smaller and more functional tables for our use. Photos are attached in the "Modifications" section of the this website under Hunter 386. I bought a 9ft plank of teak, designed a pattern and had a local woodworking shop cut, glue and give me the "rough" tables back to me. I then did the final finish work and installation. We love the results.
BTW. If anyone needs the original size table I still have it. I'm located in Virginia and you could have it for a song.

i concur with the "cutdown" ideas, but will the tables still convert to a bunk?

It appears that I am on the same page as most of you. I use the leaf almost exclusively since it is comfortable while at the settee. It looks like cutting 3-4" on the aft edge and 2-3" off on the starboar and forward edges will make the table more usable. At that point I will need to address the trim around the edges. either make it match the leaf or replace all of the trim. The table should still convert to a bunk as it will be very close to original size. If not, those few time it is converted we could use a piece of wood to span the gap.

Teak Salon Table

We did this last year to our 94 Vision 36. The original table was enormous. I found the original table screwed down to another smaller tabletop. This smaller table top was the perfect size to fit down below the edges of the settee cushions to make the salon berth. We used the smaller table top as a pattern and made a new solid teak tabletop. We applied about three coats of oil and it matches the interior perfectly. It fits the cushions perfectly to make the salon berth and we can actually sit around our table and use our salon now.

Both of the old tabletops were shit quality. The cost of the teak was only about $ 120. I wouldn't waste my time trying to add trim pieces to that old laminate top, it's loaded with staples and you won't be able to get a decent cut.

If you want to see pictures go to yachtworld.com and do advanced search and type in Hunter Vision 36. Ours is the one for sale in Richmond, CA.

Good Luck!
