My "new" '83 had rugs installed two years ago. They're marine blue, look nice, but the underneath black coating is shredding off. Better to 86 'em or keep vacuuming up the black crud? Or no rugs at all?

My 95 came with a gray rug which I've never used. I like to look inside my bilge each trip to the boat. I bought a couple of throw rugs that I can easily lift and shake out overboard. I'm on a mooring so vacuuming is not an option. You could use the old one as a template and cut an indoor/outdoor rug to fit?

rug

I have a new '82 and it had a rug at one time because there are snaps attached to the sole. In my previous boat, I had carpet ( gets dirty fast, collects dog hair but cheap ) and also Home Depot product called Allure. It is a kind of vinyl and lays like planks. I used a permanent magic marker to simulate the teak lines between boards. Looks good and is waterproof. About $100 in material. Trick is to score and heat and bend to the curve at the edges of the sole. I think I will go with this method, although the carpet is way easier. Russ

Re: rug

On our 30 we have a few throw rugs, and we are really happy with them. They have a white rubber back but they have held up well and never slip. We have free access to our bilge and they look really nice. One tip I would offer if you decide to go with throws is to purchase twice the set up you like (in our case it is 4 rugs, 3 different sizes) and put one set away. When the first set are ready to toss, you have another ...because guaranteed you won't find the same ones you like again, down the road.

I picked up some Berber carpet from Lowes. It was about $30 a running yard. The width is 15'. I needed 39'' for the sole and did not want to pay for two yds. I knew the cut extra and I told the guy I really needed 39'' so he cut it at 48'' and only charged for the one yard. Thid gave me enough to do the sole in the cabin and head all in one piece. My son-in-law installed it for free. It took him about 20 minutes. I video taped part of it and posted on youtube. He was able to use the remaining to cover the aft berth. I launched for first time on Sunday and was able to lift and check bilge without a problem. The carpet is stiff enoug that it lays in place without shifting. The backing looks lit it is plastice weave or grid. If the glue is water proof it should last. If it only last 3 seasons I will be happy.

I checked indoor/outdoor rugs at our local Costco and they all have that same black crud backing. Guess I'll go with throw rugs per your suggestion. Thanks.
