Anyone with experience in this area??? We are thinking about sailing there and anchoring for a couple of nights. We have been there by car and kayaked the bay and had a great time. It was hot and buggy but the water was clear and we saw several sharks, rays, dolphins and eagles. A high point was a huge loggerhead turtle that we got within paddle length. I counted 12 species of birds at our campsite. There were also about a dozen types of butterflies. The peninsula is a state park and we don't know if they allow anchoring and coming to shore. The best looking anchorage is marked as a spoil area. In mobile bay spoil areas are about the same depth as the surrounding areas(in my experience).

Have You Considered Cozumel ;D

St Joe Bay is about the only place left around here that is not overrun by people/boats. Eagle Harbor, about half way down the spit, is a pretty good anchorage in all but an east wind. We have not been hasseled by the park rangers when we have come ashore by boat. Small marina at Eagle Harbor but no facilities. Enjoy it but please do not tell your friends.

You are right

In retrospect St Joe Peninsula state park is awful!!!! Too many bugs , shallow water, no protection. Murky water full of gators and water moccasins and the land is crawling with eastern diamondback rattlers. I think I'll go to Tampa or Miami!!!! I've heard that if the ticks and sketers don't get you the snakes and gators will.. The only birds are seagulls crows and pigeons...
