Sails

Hello,
I'm hoping someone can help me find a source for used sails. I sail a 1984 O'Day 222. I recently took a huge pay cut (as did a lot of us) and need to find a deal. I have original sails that are in tough shape. My specs are: I- 22'8
J- 7'8
P- 23'8
E- 10'
Could someone tell me the range of sail size I could use on this boat? I'm a rookie.

They have boats listed by maker, find boat maker, then boat, then check mains (or jibs) in stock and it will have a list on the top of the page showing useable measurements.
(sounds like a longer process than it really is)

Seems to be pretty accurate, I looked a a few that I knew, and they corresponded pretty well with what I had measured.

On that site, when actually looking for a sail I find it easier to search by dimensions not by the boat.

I've never bought from them, but don't think I'd hesitate to do so.

We have bought several sails from Bacon's over the years and their rating system is excellent. If it is rated good it will be in great shape and if rated excellent it will be like new. They inspect every sail very carefully.

I, too, like Bacons and have bought a few used sails from them over the years. I have found that they tend to underrate their sails, that is, they are in better shape than the category they are rated in would suggest. I also like the idea of being able to return a sail if I don't like it or it doesn't fit. And while eBay can also be a source of good sail bargains, you've got to be very sure of your measurements and may have to negotiate with every seller the terms under which they would accept the return of a sail you bought from them -- and your money.

I've also found that it is worthwhile to contact all the sailmakers/lofts in your area and let them know what your are looking for. At times, they'll make a new sail for someone who either changes his mind or otherwise does not pick up the sail they ordered. In such a case, you may be able to pick up a new sail at cost or significantly less than the new cost.

For headsails the foot can be roughly 100-150% of J. You can go on the big side, but it will be tougher for a beginner to handle. Is the mast up or down? Does the boat have roller furling?

The mast is down. Undercover , & ready for 12 more inches of whitestuff. I'm looking to price a CDI FF2 also. Thanks

Bacons and I are both in Annapolis. I've been in there many times (most recently Thursday) and see them rig the sails on a big, long, table to critique them. They also have many new, and many used, parts.
