Sails on board

Hi sailing world, we are taking off next year from Ontario Canada, through the trent system then the hudson river. Will have about 5 sails on the boat with the mast unstepped then 3 on board once we step again. Any recommendations as to where to store sails for the month we are without the mast? takes a lot of space. We are on a 40 hunter? any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Ship them to the destination where you intend to become a sailboat. Find a sail loft that knows how to care for them.

I have my spare jib bricked and under the V berth, not just under the cushions. A 40 foot boat should have tons of that kinda dead storage space.

Have a great trip, safe journey.

I'm sure you'll have a spare berth for the trip? Just fold them into the bags and tuck them into a spare bunk, nice and cozy.
All our sails not in use are stowed under the V-berth forward, permanently. The better you fold them the less space they take.

Can you get thru the Trent system in a 40' sailboat? I would verify all of the locks, as a few may not be passable with that size boat. I think by-passing all of Lake Erie would be a good idea and heading straight for Thousand Islands after the North Channel is a good idea.

We can, but we are actually heading down Lake Huron through detroit and hitting the Erie Canal.

We sent a sail off to a loft to have a quote on getting repairs done. It took them several weeks to find it again afterwards when we told them we wanted it back. Would you want to risk sending all your sails a loft you don't know well right at the start of your big trip? Fold them snugly and stow them below. They could even come in handy as extra blankets to sleep under if it gets cold.
