Is this something I can do or should I send the sails to a pro to clean them and treat them? How often should one treat/clean the sails?

After the season

Nearby sail lofts will do it reasonabily. Or try Sail Care in PA, which re-resins them.

Sailcare

Sent them the main from my 25.5 last winter. Came back looking like new and stiff. At the end of the season, the sails are still in great shape. Before you invest in a cleaning, you should check the conditions of the sail to see of they are stretched and worth processing. Sailcare will inspect and repair, at additional cost, any problems they find prior to cleaning and applying the resin.

Caution with Sailcare

I sent my sails to Sailcare two seasons ago. I was very pleased with the cleaning, repairs and service. But they never told me that the sails were stretched. They did the work and I got them back. Also, keep in mind, that if your sails are tired and weak, that a re-resin will not bring back the original strength. This past summer I blew out my mainsail at the first reef point. The material was weak. When I went to have it repaired, that is when I found out the true conditions of the material. Subsequently, I have a new mainsail on order for next season.
