If you follow the posts she has on facebook (I only do a little) it was a facebook subscriber that told her if she put in a paypal link that people could help her offset the cost of the repairs.
Ah, it was mostly the youtube I followed up until just a couple months ago when I added the FB feed to my follows. I've seen other people that have jumped into an adventure, something happens, and then they're running around with their hands out begging for help. Definitely a good suggestion that was made though. I guess I'm more apt to volunteer to help when I feel that it's not being expected of me. Kind of "Hey, I admire your undertaking, and I'd like to help in a little way that I can" moment. Makes me feel good about myself I guess lol.

Hmm..speaking of, this weeks should be coming up soon. I need to keep an eye out, I want to see the paint progress!

Old School German Nationalism.... are you kidding me? What the heck does that mean? And why does it matter? That sounds a little xenophobic. I noticed in her videos that she's drinking the local beer, not german beer....
Nothing wrong with that line of thought from a historical curiosity perspective. Many historians and history fans have pondered the culturally sophisticated German societies past militarism dichotomy. Sort of like the American southern baptist 18th century defense of American chattel slavery while espousing love and brotherhood. A cultural phenomena worthy of debate.

Perhaps this would be a good time to elaborate. My comment regarding German Nationalism comes from direct experience. In my field (CNC Repair Technician) I encounter machines made from virtually every industrialized country. What I have seen first hand is german engineering is excessively engineered to the point of unrealiable. These machines use german parts exclusively despite better options from outside Europe in general and Germany in particular. They use Siemens controls exclusively despite Fanuc, Yaskawa (Yasnac) or even OSP Microsoft based operating systems which are far superior in both reliability and performance. Lead times from Germany range from several weeks to several months when aquiring spare parts. Couple this with shipping costs for expedited orders and they are expensive and production killers. I do not intend to imply a prewar nationalism but more of a buy American the job you save might be yours type of nationalism. With so many products avaible from the US I remained puzzled by her insistance to use products from her homeland which would significantly increase cost and lead times due to shipping from Europe. For further reading may I suggest this week's comments from Siemens regarding the GE aquisition of France's Alstom energy units. Phrases like, " We can't have Alstom in the hands of non European companies."

Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill........ what the hell difference does it make. Besides, the marine industry is worldwide... it isn't based only in the US.... Interlux is owned by a dutch chemical company and outside the US it uses Corporate name International, for International Paints. There are many online chandleries based in Germany and other EC countries.... and many products are regionally branded. As in the Interlux example. Maybe she uses this chandlery.... it's german.... http://www.svb24.com/

But forget the world view, perhaps Nike uses the brands that she is familiar with, or are the cheapest, or highest rated, or her boatyard friends and technicians recommend, or perhaps she has a contact that gets her a deal..... whatever... she's in Panama, not the US, and she can use any damn product she wants.... it's her boat, her money, her life. You are so out there on this I'm having a hard time containing my laughter.... sorry... it's just too funny. It's just a german girl and her sailing blog.... it ain't 60 minutes.

You guys are killing me.......... I've never heard so much rubbish in my life. You sound like Fox News reporting.... If you want the truth, why don't you contact her through the FB page and confront her with this serious breech of nationalistic impropriety..... She will probably say ... "WTF are you talking about? I'm just trying to get my boat fixed up so I can go sailing.... either give me a hand or shut up."

I lived in Germany- my best guess about why they tend to use their own products has to do with economic policy rather than nationalism. Sure, they are a little house proud, but they are less likely perhaps than Americans to source globally because they view it as being good for the economy to do so. That's just a guess, but it wouldn't surprise me if there were regulations encouraging them to do so, because if there's one thing Germans love, it's regulations. My cousin, who owns the family dairy farm in northwest Germany said it took him three years to get approval to increase the herd by 30 head. Here, I'm pretty sure what you do is....buy yourself 30 new cows.

she never tells us the make of her boat... I am interested in what size and make her boat is... does anyone know ?
The boat is a Reinke Super 10. Thirty seven footer, I believe. Tiller steered. If my understanding is correct, she arrived in Panama in April of last year and purchased the boat in May.

And the fact that Nike is pleasant to look at does, in fact, enhance the appeal of her videos from my perspective. OTOH, my wife has become an avid follower of her adventures as well, so maybe it's not all about the prurient aspects.

She mentioned on her FB I think it was, that this weeks would be late due to her wanting to get all the paintwork done. I see that's been completed per her last FB post, so I imagine she's going to put the video together soon :)

This was posted with pictures of the new bottom paint:
look at theeeeeese!!! Brand new zinks with aluminium arms freshly welded to the hull. Karl must be very happy ! The next video is postponed to when the paint is all done...hopefully beginning of next week (rain rain rain...). Thanks for you patience everyone and have a beautiful weekend!
There was a moment, around "episode 24 bottomless pit" where she was so distraught I thought she was going to quit.... then was an unusually long wait for her to upload the next installment, I believe, ... but in any event there's a lot of waiting around for supplies, then frantic activity getting things prepped. Remember the sanding party where she made her own discs because the composite grinder were too expensive to supply 5 or 6 machines.

I'm really excited for her... Now she can move on to the next onslaught of problems... yippee.

I think it is so cool that many of us have become so interested in her project. There's just something about a determined, singleminded woman who wants to sail that appeals to me... I followed Jessica Watson and Laura Dekker faithfully because these gals were inspirational to me... but Nike is even more so because she is so transparent.

I've seen it referenced a few times in articles, being the 37-foot aluminum Reinke Super 10, and judging by the interior shots, it does seem to fit the mold. I know with some of the wide angles of the camera outside looking up, it doesn't look 37 on land.

Ha good point joe, I probably brought that up in the wrong place. It's just that I am a bit of a history nut and often irritate people by bringing up crap that very few others are interested in. But to be compared to Fox "news", Joe that really was a low blow.

She has the new video up now. And when you watch it, you'll see part of the reason for the delay- Hard to paint in that kind of rain:)
