I enjoy teaching novice crews about the joys of sailing. Often, on my boat it seems like school. My crews, who often have little sailing experience, soak this stuff up. I was told by my future son-in-law last weekend that my teaching opened a whole new world for him. Lately, I have been considering becoming a sailing instructor in another life as a semi-retired boat bum. Either on my own boat or on the boats of a local charter company (probably simpler). I am sure some of you have instructed or are currently instructing. Any hints/comments?

Dice throw...

I would say to think a bit about it, maybe get out paper and pen and list pro's and con's...but my gut says that one should go with their gut. You may find that it turns recreation into work...but if you don't throw the dice you'll never know. You can almost always return to where you are now.

Try it

I teach a sailing course for our local adult-ed section, and it's very popular. Of course, there's no money in it for me but it's enjoyable to see those teachable moments in their eyes and to see some of them go on to buy boats. As long as they don't buy one bigger than mine! Seriously, it's the highlight of my year to teach the course.

Teacher

When giving information sparks the desire to become an instructor one discovers how to learn. While giving information as both student and teacher you learn how to discover. And when you learn from your students you will discover why you teach.

sailing instructors.....

...are often certified through organizations like US Sailing. They offer courses and various levels of certification. Check this link to see what I'm talking about. http://www.ussailing.org/training/Instructors/InstructorCourses.asp Not sure about Canada, but it is logical to think that they have similar programs.
