I recently bought a H25 with a 1991 outboard, Johnson Sailmaster 8.0. It has some type of generator on it with wiring hooked up to battery/electic system (still investigating). Is outboard intended to keep battery recharged or just run electic while motor is running? Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks Bill

Most engines with generators or

altenators are set up to recharge the battery allowing you to use battery power anytime. Just be careful or you'll use too much of the battery and will not have electric start. I've got a 9.9 Tahatsu that keep the battery charged nicely and I run the motor only 40 minutes per sail and sometimes less. Howwever, I'm typically not running much more than my depthfinder when sailing. Hayden

Evinrude Sailer

Bill, I once had a new Evinrude Sailer (Same as Johnson) I put on a Catalina 25 back in 1992. It primarily charged the battery but didn't have a voltage requlator. So I was advised by the dealer that if I did a lot of motoring at one time that I should be careful not to overcharge the battery. He told me that if thought the battery was fully charged and if I had doubts about the battery overcharging then to simply turn on an interior light. That would be enough to "absorb" and use the generated charge so that the battery would not overcharge.

Some

small outboards have a "Lighting Generator", unregulated & to power running lights. Some have an actual "Charging Alternator". Regards Gord
