I need a repair, and some general maintenance on my sails - jib and main on a Catalina 36. Can someone please recommend a good sailmaker or loft in or around Massachusetts?

Thanks,

jv

If you are serious about sailing and plan to be doing it for a while I'd recommend getting th book "The Sailmakers Apprentice" $25. A lot of general maintenance is within your capabilities with just a sewing palm and needle and thread.

Yes, I have the book, but in this case, there are things that would be tough, or very time consuming to do without a loft and machine stitching.

I do my sail repair while watching TV. Most of that "machine" stitching that requires lots of "muscle" is really hand stitching as most machines can't do it.
Course it is someone else’s time and your money at that point.

Bill, if you were close by I'd just drop my sail off at your place. :) Really, though, I know what's involved, I really just want to find a well-recommended sailmaker or loft.

Thanks to those who replied; it will really be helpful to hear recommendations from folks who actually had them do some work, and hear details of the experience.

Thanks,

jv

I am happy with the North Sails service loft on Long Island as well as the Doyle you can walk into both and and meet who will work on your sail and get plenty of no cost advise

I would think you would always get better results knowing who is fixing your sails as the women who sews mine is and expert sailor who understands how the product is used :)

It's rather far from Mass but I have used Sailors Choice in Amityville NY also on Long Island. Jim is a heck of a nice guy and my family has been dealing with that loft for years. I had both sails serviced and cleaned, new tell tales on both, reinforced batten pockets, a new UV cover for my 150 roller and my mainsail cover reinforced for about $500.

Thanks! That's the kind of recommendation with detail I can use. I will probably not go there (too far for me), but at least it starts to give me an idea of what things cost.

Cheers,

I'll second the recommendation for Doyle in Salem-they've been excellent to deal with, new main, jib, spinn and code zero for our 356 along with maintenance and repairs. Excellent workmanship and service along with good pricing.

Have they done work for you? Any comments on quality, price, turn-around time?

Thanks,

They have done work for us. The first time was 4 years ago for some one design sails that I needed in short order for a Father's Day gift. They accommodated our schedule and did a fantastic job - price was not the cheapest, but we like to keep our business local.

This past off season they cut new sails for our boat (main, RF genoa and sail cover). The price was very reasonable and well in line with other quotes we received (actually cheaper than some). Chris Howes was fantastic to work with, very patient with our questions and spent as much time as we needed. They ended up sticking to their original price but threw in a bunch of 'extras' at no cost after we sat down with them for the final design phase. They had just secured the job to cut the sails for Mirabella V, so our little 28' certainly wasn't paying the bills - but they still treated us like their best customer. Our sails were cut in the Salem loft right before they started on Mirabella. When we went to pick them up in the Spring, they walked through every detail with us on the loft floor. At that time they were working on new sails for the Maltese Falcon. It's refreshing to see customer service still exists, even for the little guy.

Sperry in Marion?

Wow, Doyle sounds pretty good.

How about Sperry sails in Marion, MA? I spent a long time on the phone with Ben Sperry today. He was very attentive to my needs, and clear and reasonable in his explanations of how they work. He said he'll be at the Newport boat show this weekend. I like him. Would love to hear of some experiences with Sperry.

If you can get a little further North there are plenty of good ones up here around Portland. Hallet Sails in Falmouth, Bayview Sails in Yarmouth and Maine Sailing Partners in Freeport are all top quality and the owners all have racing backgrounds..
