Dear All,
Sailing trip Lake Ontario
We would like to spend 5 days sailing in Lake Ontario.
We will launch the boat at Scarborough bluffs, but we have no idea where to go.
Can anyone point us to nice places we can visit while sailing? And where we can dock the boat without paying any money? The whole idea here is to spend 5 days sailing with the family and have some fun taking pictures. Any suggestions would be appreciated

I don't think you will find too many places for anchoring out. If you go west, there is a great anchorage in the hamilton bay. Its at the far west end of the bay and you wouldn't know you were in the city. If going east I would think Bay of Quinte you could find some anchorage. The only other is niagara on the lake. I have a co-worker who slips his boat there and said there is good anchorage up the river. I hope to get there this year myself.
Since your boat is trailerable have you thought of other places other than lake Ontario? I'm just getting ready for a trip to the North Channel for a week.
I know its expensive paying slip fees to go anywhere on the lake. This is the reason I bought a trailerable. Also its a big lake and the wind can be fickle.

One last tip. If you go to the Toronto boat show next winter you can get a free slip night at Toronto Island. We did this last year and is very nice there. We did it as a three day trip with day 1 going to Port Credit. Day 2 to the island and day three all the way back to Hamilton. If you have good wind you can get to Hamilton in about 6 hrs from the island. We had to motor for about 2 hrs in 1/2 mille fog. No wind. Again very fickle wind.

I really liked Cobourg Marina, east of Toronto, though I think you have to pay even to anchor (not much money to anchor, though). Very protected water, very quiet, and a gorgeous marina and town with many shops and restaurants. I was there when some sort of street fair was going on, which was also nice.

You can't see it in the pic, but the breakwater hooks all the way around the south end, and there's just a relatively narrow opening into the bay at the south-east corner.

Not much help for Scarborough area but there are some really decent alternatives close by.

If you could trailer the 2 hours to Belleville, you could sail the protected waters of Bay of Quinte. We spent a week sailing from there to Kingston and had a friend drive us back to Belleville to get the trailer. Only disadvantage is that almost all property bordering the water is private.

A coupe hours south gets you to the Long Point area of Lake Erie (where we sail). Protected waters, warm, many places to anchor out, lots of places to swim and go ashore (not all private property like most places). You can also sail to Port Dover and stay at the town docks for free.

Are you set on Scarborough? If you go a little further East you can go to the Thousand Islands. Lots of places to anchor etc.

I would suggest you pick up the Ports Cruising Guide for Lake Ontario and Thousand Islands. Will have lots of info on where to go and what to see and take all the guesswork out of your trip.
