Sailing yellowstone

I am taking my boat to yellowstone lake this summer, and am wondering about some of the reg.'s. I know you can get a week pass but can you anchor out wherever you want for multiple days? Is it o.k to tether the boat to the land (or would you worry about bears, etc.?)?

Any places/anchorages that stand out to anyone? How about nearby (within a few hundred miles) lakes that stand out as great lakes either for playing/racing other sailboats or for natural beauty.

I've have read what is in the archives. But still wondering about being able to beach or anchor the boat very near shore and hike trails around the lake, etc.

Call the park and have them send you a packet. You have to anchor at designated anchorages and it is best to reserve them before you get there.

Most of these sites are actually for boaters in kayaks, so you would anchor and could then go ashore as they would be tent camping on shore. You can't anchor anywhere you want. Their web site shows designated anchorages.

They told me that if you are caught by weather there are exceptions to staying longer or to going to some place safe. Don't forget that some of the lake is a no motor zone, so if you sail into and anchor at a site in one of those areas you have to paddle or sail out.

We hope to be there late July or early August and got the packet, but we haven't done anything yet. Your post reminded me that we need to.

Also I understand that the wind can come up quick there and generate some big waves and challenging conditions. I'll see if I can find some links to some guys with Macs that have sailed there. I lived in Wyo for years and have been in the park many times, but never boated there. It is one of my favorite National Parks.

Biorapper may I suggest that you visit and register at The Trailer Sailor BB, http://bbs.trailersailor.com/forums/trailersailor/index.cgi . Post a message asking about Montana and Wyoming lake sailing and you should get some first hand info. There are several regulars who trailer sail in that area of the country.
