sailing with the trans locked?

Just been reading the recent post on stuffing box seals & noted that everyone seems to sail with the tranny in nuetral. In my Cat with the mighty Yanmar YS-12, I sail with it locked in reverse to keep the shaft from spinning. It works for me but am I missing something here? Thanks

I would suggest doing what Yanmar suggest, not necessarily what another sailor does. At least check to see what Yanmar recommends.

It has nothing to do with the shaft seal, and everything to do with the type of transmission fitted to that Yanmar. Yanmar specifies neutral for the vast majority of their transmissions (and voids the transmission warranty if you ignore the directive).

That is besides the fact that a stopped prop induces a significant amout of drag which could result in speed losses of up to approximately 1/2 knots.

LOL - you don't need adobe, lots of stuff opens PDF files - but here is the important part:

We continue to get questions regarding the correct gear position while sailing with the engine OFF. This advisory is issued as a reminder; Yanmar requires that if sailing with the engine OFF (not running) the transmission shifter must be in the neutral position or internal damage to the gear or sail-drive will result. This damage will not be covered by Yanmar's Limited Warranty. Please instruct customers and dealers who deliver the sailboat to the customer, of the correct (Neutral) position for the marine gear while sailing.
