Something a friend showed me on my Oday 25 that is very quick and easy (and FREE, like our fuel!), is a small-diameter line secured to a cleat or stanchion or anything firm on the aft end of the boat (behind the plane of the tiller's front end if possible), wrapped twice around the tiller, and led to the opposite side to a similar fitting. This creates a nice bit of tension on the tiller and holds it firmly enough in place so you can let go for a few minutes.

Not nearly as long-term reliant as an autohelm, but works on a similar principle to the TillerTamer without drilling holes into your beautiful newly varnished ash piece of art. And, I can set it up and take it down very very easily.

One last thing....you'll find with the tiller tamer that your tiller cover (if you use one) won't fit all the way onto the tiller....the Tamer is too bulky. You have to remove the Tamer in order to fit the cover, and re-securing those big screws all the time reduces their "bite". Just a voice of experience.

Good luck! Let us know what you decide.

One last thought: I agree with the captain that wouldn't connect your tiller to your outboard. I'm told I'm cheating when I do this, but I often steer with both the outboard AND the tiller in tight quarters, and especially in reverse I often value the flexibility of them operating independently.

Hey Joe,
did you see the add for the "new" tillers that this forums store has? Looks like a good idea, pops up and everything
