Sailing video blog ... Untie the Lines

Well, I'm a sucker for a nice girl, and Sue accuses me of being a pervert if she thinks there is something voyeuristic about what I find to watch on youtube. But I convinced her to watch a few episodes, and even Sue found the video blog to be compelling.

It's about a young German woman who bought a 20+ year-old sailboat in Panama - sight unseen - and is attempting to restore it so she can follow thru with her dream to sail parts of the Pacific and eventually return to Germany on her boat. There are about 25 episodes each about 5 minutes or less, and done with very nice quality.

Unfortunately, I think she may have hit a wall and will not be able to follow thru. It appears that she may have had very bad advise on her purchase. Don't be mislead by the Trailer ... that film was done on a friend's sister ship, which is in very nice condition.

For me, the most compelling component of the blogs is that the woman is brutally honest and her emotions are right there on her sleeve. I found her last video heartbreaking (at least the last one that I saw), after so many that were hopeful and uplifting. So far, I'm hoping for her return, but I'm not sure where she is at ...

Along the same lines of not being a lurking voyeur either :D, here is another blog of two young ladies sailing (doing the Great Loop actually, just very slowly). Very entertaining and has been mentioned on SBO before. http://katieandjessieonaboat.com/ It is a riot, very well written, and their voyage is ongoing and updated very regularly.

I am in awe, in equal measure, with this German girls tenacity and naïveté. It is no wonder people die at sea. The last sailing video this painful to watch was Redford's new flick All is Lost. Three words: Learn to sail.

We watched both. I like how well the German girl edits her videos. Considering she is burning them weekly, that is pretty impressive. My wife says she makes her sick the way she can rip apart the boat, refinish what needs to be done, and put it back together. She does seem to have a well rounded set of skills with boat repair and electrical repair.

We checked out Katie and Jessie on a boat. The videos are very hit and miss. Looks like a cool adventure.

We will be looking forward to the weekly updates from the German girl.

Recess, I'm wondering if we will see more videos. I think Nike may have come to the conclusion that any more money spent will be good money after bad. I saw her facebook page and she seems pretty upbeat, but that last video painted a very bleak picture. She has an aluminum boat that is filled with holes, and the extent of damage is still unknown. She can't continue spending money on it indefinitely, so defining the extent of damage and cost of repairs is critical before going any further.

Youth and resiliency, she has going for her ...

I agree, the video production is very good. I'd like to think she will keep going.

I hope she does continue after Carneval is over. Not sure she picked the right boat, but it serves as a good lesson to all, get it checked out. I left a post of encouragement on her facebook page.

Watching it was a great way to spend some winter time. Wonder if she will be back making more videos.

She is starting to sound defeated and broken. I think her wish list of travel is a bit too aggressive for a novice sailor. She seems to reel herself in though.

Yeah, she got in over her head...but so what?

If she spent all that money and time on a newer boat with fewer issues, there would be no way she would have picked up the skill sets she has apparently obtained. That girl has learned more about engines and boat systems than 90% of the people who own sailboats today. Add the fact that she can REPAIR most of those systems is another feather in her bandanna, er, cap.

She is also not afraid of venturing out into the open ocean, which is something many sailors are reluctant to do.

I spent a ton of money on my "junker" catalina which I thought I'd get rid of if I ever decided I like sailing. Well, five years later, I am grateful for all the problems I've had with my engine and other systems because I have learned so much. Sure I cursed at the time, but it's a good feeling when other boaters at my marina are asking ME for help or advice!

It's fitting her name is Nike...as in Just do it!

I hope she's able scrounge up some dough and repair the hull. Perhaps she can make enough scratch to support further cruising. Maybe she'll make a movie about her adventure some day. It couldn't be worse than All is Lost, so what the hell!

after reading her comments on # 25 it seems she is getting help from all over the world in the form of donations...i am glad that is happinging.....i think with a little help from her following she will keep going ...the sailing community is a great bunch and always willing to help....its always nice to see some one who will help them selves get a leg up...

regards

woody

Any update on Nike?

No weekly posting so far, hope she is just too busy making great progress to post this week.

Someone found her on Facebook? Any news there?

I don't understand the "voyeuristic" connection made in this thread - because these folks are female??? So what? If they were male why wouldn't that be voyeuristic as well? I'm so glad my Admiral isn't the jealous type and neither am I - we both know who we married.

They post publicly on the internet for all to view if they wish or if they can - or not.

I wish our internet connection was good enough to watch such things.

Just wondering aloud here...

Not really seeing the voyeuristic behavior in this thread. Scott said his wife accuses him of it if the youtube has a young lady in it. But after he told her to take a look she soon seen it is about the content, not just because it has a young lady.

The young lady's name is Nike, and she does a great job of documenting her adventure of buying a boat she thought was solid only to find it needs a ton of work. It is great to see a young person, male or female, taking on a job like this and sticking with it. She does a great job documenting her adventure considering she is editing on the fly.

My wife loves watching it with me. Her spirit reminds us of why we got into sailing and took on refitting a 1980 sailboat. I can honestly say ours just had years, it was no way as far gone as hers is.

She has also been doing one heck of a job with the refitting and repairs.

Above all I appreciate her fearless attitude and eagerness to learn how to sail by just getting out there and doing it.

Boy, if the Nike Shoe people knew about her "just do it" attitude, they'd probably want to pick her up as a sponsor and throw enough cash at her to get that boat spanky new in no time! (She'd deserve it too)
