Old salts say "never sail to weather". Are there any exceptions to this sensible rule? (Got caught in a horrific storm on the river last weekend)

No Choice

Dave, Sometimes, you have no choice. I got "tagged" by exactly the same storm as you and had planned to sail South anyways - towards the Smyrna Yacht Club. I also "got it" just South of the New Smyrna 65 ft. high rise bridge. I was "sailing away from the weather". It was just a bit faster! Ron s/v Contemplation h320

Sometimes ya just gotta do it!

Last week we got caught in a monster rain and lightning storm. Out here in the west it is very easy to be in a canyon that allows no view of the weather approaching. We listened to Norm on the VHF and he said to expect thunderstorms in the late afternoon. This storm was a 9:30 am and we were 1 to 1 1/2 mile from any shore. With a 40' lightning rod on top, we dropped sail and hauled ass up wind towards the closest shore. It was an excersize in vain. 7 knots upwind, 35 knots back. It's not often you can reach max hull speed in reverse. In the end had I gone down wind we would have been probably just as safe, but the boat would been launched over the border into Canada or possibily over the polar ice cap into Russia. The resulting melting of the ice cap by the friction of my fingernails would have destroyed our governments position on global warming. Ray

Sailing to weather?

I always thought "sailing to weather" meant sailing close hauled, or on the wind. It has nothing to do with inclement weather. A couple weeks ago we sailed our H31 from St. Michael's to Rock Hall, MD "hard on the wind" in 20 or so knots. It was fantastic!

Tom - How long was the sail?

Tom: I'm at Haven Harbour marina in Rock Hall and have been considering a sail to St Michaels this summer. What route did you take (Kent Narrows or the west side of Kent Island?) and how long in time and miles was the trip? Thanks.
